Essential Exercises-The Petites Etudes are of similar melodic charm as Gariboldi's Études mignonnes Op.131 (Schott ED 20354). A bit more virtuoso with regard to the fingering technique and articulation (and with the additional keys E major and Ab major) they are in a sense a continuation of his 'mignonnes'. In this volume the use of dynamics and the articulation described in great detail are essential to the interpretation of the études. Performed accurately they freshen the sound and sharpen the listener's perception especially through the constantly varying execution of similar motifs. A fresh approach-Flute Sight-Reading 1 aims to establish good practice and provide an early introduction to the essential skill of sight-reading. Sight-reading in some form should become a regular part of a student's routine each time they get out the flute and this book aims to establish the habit early in a student’s learning process. There are 8 sections which in a logical sequence gradually introduce new notes rhythms articulations dynamics and Italian terms - much as you would find in a beginner's flute method. The emphasis is on providing idiomatic tunes and structures rather than sterile sight-reading exercises. What is a “good” tone in flute playing? Surely it must be more than just “clean” (ie not producing many unwanted sounds) “colourful” (with adequate timbre) “flexible” (able to produce dynamic adjustments) or just a really big tone. The well-known Swiss flautist P.-L. Graf is concerned that the production of tone should not be seen as an aesthetic end in itself but chiefly as a living means of expression and as a “musical” event. In this practice volume he has picked 3x7 examples from the flute and operatic repertoire in order to work through three sets of themes: 1.) cantabile playing at a piano dynamic 2.) dynamic flexibility and variation of tone colour 3.) fullness and intensity of sound. This offers concentrated training for all flautists from student through to professional player.
