Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is regarded as one of the last great harp-players of Ireland and seems to be surrounded by an almost mystical aura. Numerous anecdotes exist which testify to a strong personality and a tremendous musical talent as well as enormous self-confidence. Although primarily known by flute players for her important Concertino, Op. 107, Cécile Chaminade was a brilliant pianist with nearly 200 compositions for the instrument published during her lifetime. This Toccata, Op. 39, is a virtuosic show-piece featuring a perpetual stream of 16th notes over a light and bubbly accompaniment.
