Among them is that of Heinz Lohmann, which Breitkopf and Härtel began publishing in 1967 and whose concept strove for an amalgamation of practice and Urtext. Current Urtext status, historically informed, edited with performers in mind: More than 40 years later, the demands made on a new Urtext edition of Bach's organ works are as stringent as ever before. Br, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal and Bochum. Since his retirement in 1997 he has been living in Erlangen. Between 1997 and 2007 Breig was appointed General Editor of the complete edition of Richard Wagners letters. Furthermore he is the author of the Bach article in the dictionary Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, 2nd edition). Pieter Dirksen (* 1961) studied organ, harpsichord and musicology. His 1996 doctoral thesis on Sweelinck's keyboard music was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with Harald Vogel, he edited Sweelinck's Complete Works for Keyboard Instrument (4 volumes, Breitkopf and Härtel). Freie Orgelwerke - BuxWV 136-153, 158. Par BUXTEHUDE DIETERICH. This edition is the result of Harald Vogel?s many years of practice as an organist and musicologist. The music text is based on a reevaluation of 17 th - and 18 th -century manuscripts containing the free organ and keyboard works by Buxtehude. They originated during a transitional phase between the traditional letter tablature and the staff notation still in use today. Since many works have survived only in transcriptions for staff notation, the editor was confronted with a high error rate, which he carefully analyzes in the ?Einzelanmerkungen?. During the preparation of the edition, the editor always kept sight of the performance practice, but still, the image of the sources is never distorted (e. g. by superfluous rests, beaming not conforming to the sources and the unhistorical adjustment of time signatures) and stays very close to the compositional notation, the letter tablature. The flexible use of three staves and the differentiated distribution of the voices on the staves allow for an approximation in reading conventions of historical notation with its resulting information about hand division. Grouping the free organ repertoire into works with obbligato pedal and works for manuals, this edition is organized in two volumes. The first subvolume (I/1, EB 9304) contains the Preface and the Preludes, whereas the second subvolume (I/2, EB 9305) contains Toccatas, Ostinato works, alternative versions and a comprehensive Critical Commentary (in German only). Volume II (EB 9306) contains Buxtehude?s free organ and keyboard works (manualiter) with the corresponding texts (Preface and Critical Commentary). Until 1971, Harald Vogel worked on a dissertation (with Georg von Dadelsen, Hamburg) on ?Die Fuge um Bach?. The North German fugue style, reaching a peak in Buxtehude?s work, is characterized by a constant diversity of details in subject and polyphonic progressions. One of the ?indicators of the fantastic style? is the dissolution of the polyphonic structures at the ends of the fugues, evident in Buxtehude?s work. The Fantasy in D minor (No. 1) was written in 1957 by Miloslav Kabelác, one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century. The prominent Czech organist Jirí Reinberger initiated the composition. It was the composer's first work for solo organ and the piece soon became a staple of international organ repertoire. Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. Par HERCHENRODER MARTIN. 'Toccata and Lament” was composed on commission in 2008 to inaugurate the large new organ in the Christ Church Cathedral, Rochester, NY, USA. This instrument is a detailed reconstruction of a late Baroque organ of 1776 from Vilnius in Lithuania. The point of departure - a clash of contrasting eras and musical cultures on two continents - already bodes excitement. Martin Herchenröder, a composer and professor of music theory, has incorporated these contrasts in his roughly eight-minute composition. The result is a musical idiom of rare distinction, universal in its musical resources and alternating between tonal triads and extremely dissonant clusters.
