Satz der Sonate op. 11 Die zweibändige Ausgabe unter dem Titel ?Miriam's Song' (Das Lied der Mirjam) ist jüdischen Komponistinnen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts gewidmet. Sie beinhaltet Viola-Bearbeitungen der Werke von Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, Vally Weigl, Lena Stein-Schneider und Ruth Schonthal (Band 1). Das von Schonthal aufgenommene Allegro moderato ist eine Originalkomposition für Viola und Klavier. Im 2. Band begegnen wir den Komponistinnen Helene Liebmann und Sarah Feigin. Der Titel der Ausgabe bezieht sich auf die Rolle der Prophetin Mirjam, der älteren Schwester von Mose und Aaron. Beim Auszug des israelischen Volkes aus Ägypten führte sie nach der Durchquerung des Schilfmeeres den Freudentanz und Gesang der Frauen an (2. Buch Mose 15,20-21). Bezeichnenderweise hat der Berliner Maler Wilhelm Hensel im 19. Jahrhundert seine Frau, die Komponistin Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, als Mirjam porträtiert.Das Repertoire romantischer Konzertliteratur für Viola ist recht begrenzt. Gefühlvoll: Adagio von Hensel und Nocturno von Stein. Kurzweilig: Old Time Burlesque von Weigl und Reflection on a Niggun von Feigin. Oder Sätze aus Sonaten: Das fließende Allegro moderato von Schonthal und die anspruchsvollen Variationen über la ci darem la mano von Liebmann. Élégie op. 44 for Viola and Piano-A precious gem of romantic Viola literature is now available in Henle quality. Thanks to the publisher’s good connections to Russian archives we were able to assess Glazunov’s autograph for the first timefor this first Urtext edition and uncover the discrepancies between the autograph and the first print. Written in 1893 for the Danish violist Franz Hildebrand the ?l?gie is one of the few originalworks of the 19th century for Viola and thus a welcome enrichment of the repertoire. Since the piece does not make any particularly high technical demands on the soloist the ?l?gie is ideally suited forteaching as well – and Tabea Zimmermann’s fingerings guarantee the best possible support.

For Viola and Piano this is the composer's first opused work. Premiered at the Wigmore Hall in July 1959 by Cecil Aronowitz and Margaret Kitchen.Wood: In 1957 I knew I had newly discovered the music of Schoenberg and hispupils and I knew at once that they were to show me the way forward for my music; as indeed they have ever since. The revelation was primarily an emotional experience for me and however imperfectly their influence wasreceived it was obviously reflected in the all-out chromaticism (new for me then) in the many chains of twelve notes or lesser chromatic formations (which do not here amount to serial working and have only rarely done sosince) in the characteristic harmonic and rhythmic formations the wide and sometimes angular intervals of the melodies and in general the introverted romanticism. Anyway I knew then that this was the sort of music that Ihenceforth would want to write and so I called these Variations my Opus One.The declamatory Introduction leads into the Theme heard on the viola. Six Variations follow of which No.3 is the most violent and No.4 the mostsustainedly lyrical. The recitative-like sixth variation leads into the Finale a more extended movement. The Theme returning on the piano leads to a climax at which there is a citation from Beethoven’s C minor Variations forpiano. Then their characteristics sequence of chords is heard on the piano as an accompaniment to the final statement of my own theme on the viola in the closing bars of the work.

Philipp Maintz was born in Aachen Germany in 1977. He received his first composition lessons from Michael Reudenbach. He studied composition with Robert HP Platz in Maastricht from 1997-2003 graduating with distinction followed by a further degree in composition and electronic music with Karlheinz Essl at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz. He has received scholarships and invitations from institutions including the Electronic Studio at the University of Liège the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt IRCAM Paris and the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Culture an Artist?s Scholarship from Lower Saxony for the Künstlerhof Schreyahn and otherhonours: the Supportive Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2005 a scholarship from the Wilfried Steinbrenner Foundation in 2006 and a German Government Scholarship to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris in 2007 Scholarship awarded by the German Minister of Culture for a one-year stay at the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo (2010). His compositions have been performed at festivals including the International Gaudeamus Music Week Amsterdam agora-festival Paris ars nova (SWR) International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik musica (Strasbourg) Wien Modern Hear&Now London and the Salzburg Festival.

These four pieces were written separately between 1901 and 1910 for cello and piano. They subsequently appeared in print in different versions, ranging from piano solo to full orchestra. The composer was himself a fine viola player, and, it is hoped, would have welcomed these transcriptions for viola and piano, published here for the first time.
