Malcolm arnold's concerto for Trumpet was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain for the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Royal College of Music. Trumpeter John Wallace was the soloists at the first performance in the Royal Albert Hall on 30 January 1983.

Written in 1966 Arnold drew on a more personal inspiration for these dances rather than folk music. Transcribed by Ray Farr the music depicts the fishermen farm workers and tin miners native to Cornwall going about their lives - it also includes a brief visit to the local Methodist chapel for a Sunday morning sevice!

'Contemporary-music-without-tears has always been his aim and this succinct little three-movement work showed him as skilful as ever in unpretentious directness of utterance as it were in the vernacular. For the soloist it is a gift alike in the first movement's almost indispensable fanfare-like challenges in melody sometmes as nostalgic as Poulenc (especially haunting in the seductively scored central Andante) and in the Finale's flashes of virtuosity.'Jona Chissell The Times 31 January 1983
