Nico Samitz has been composing for chamber ensembles since his school days. For over ten years he has been writing works in a wide variety of genres for the “BlechReiz BrassQuintett†ensemble, in which he himself plays trumpet and piano. His field of expertise ranges from classical pieces to jazz and meditative music—and even to pop-oriented compositions. While honing his skills in ear-training and composition at the Mozarteum, Salzburg, Nico became acquainted with a wide repertoire of works as a trumpet player with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bavarian State Opera, all of which have influenced his writing style. This work was commissioned by the Osaka Kyoiku University Wind Orchestra. The world premiere took place with trumpet soloist, Osamu Kumashiro and was conducted by the composer, who was inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) during a visit to Florence. This work is a musical collage of impressions following the composers visit to Italy. The solo part can also be performed on trumpet or euphonium. De wereldpremière werd samen met trompetsolist Osamu Kumashiro uitgevoerd onder leiding van de componist, die zich tijdens een bezoek aan Firenze heeft laten inspireren door de beroemde Ponte Vecchio (oude brug). Het werk is een muzikale collage van indrukken die Yagisawa in Italië heeft opgedaan. De solopartij kan ook op trompet of euphonium worden gespeeld. A pioneer of Finnish modern jazz, Heikki Sarmanto (1939-) is renowned for his renderings of jazz numbers. No wonder, therefore, that broken chords and familiar keys resonate and sit well under the hand in the piano part of this Northern Dreams suite.
