Le point de départ de cette composition est la mystique entourant la vie et la mort. Je souhaitais composer une uvre sans récit et jai plongé dans une sorte de quote musicale vers de nouveaux mondes sonores des enchaînements de mesures originaux des mélodies riches en tensions et des tonalités orchestrales particulières. Ce qui a indirectement donné lieu à cette composition cest la naissance de mon premier enfant qui a eu lieu à peu près au même moment que le décès dun membre cher de ma famille. Et cest dans de tels moments que lon apprend à ses dépens combien la vie et la mort sont intimement liées et combien malgré leur immense contraste elles se ressemblent paressence. Car dune part ces deux événements bouleversants sont des passages vers un nouveau monde et dautre part ils ont tous deux un énorme impact émotionnel. En outre le donneur dordre de luvre est un orchestre qui sappelle « Nieuw Leven » (Nouvelle Vie) et cet orchestre a lui-même perdu un musicien décédé dans un accident davion ce qui ma conforté dans lidée dune parfaite adéquation de ce thème avec lensemble de la situation.Je souhaite ne pas dévoiler les passages de luvre qui parlent de la vie (la naissance) et ceux qui parlent de la mort. Car il me semble justement intéressant de remettre en question la conception traditionnelle y afférente et de laisser la porte ouverte aux auditeurs. Quand vous pensez qu'un passage parle de la naissance et que vous inversez cette donnée cela suscite des questions passionnantes aussi bien sur le plan musical que métaphysique. De façon indirecte mais formidablement pénétrante la musique est capable dexprimer la quote infinie de l'homme. Elle peut si lon peut sexprimer ainsi toucher l'éternité pendant un bref instant et nous donner le sentiment d'être en mesure de dépasser la mort. Cette quote (et aussi cette aspiration) éternelle se retrouve partout dans luvre : aussi bien dans les champs de sonorité et les glissements daccent de la première partie que dans les énormes tensions et les thèmes

‘Panem et Circenses’ Bread and Games were essential for keeping the citizens of ancient Rome in check. While the bread was meant for the poorest among the Romans the Games were Popular Pastime Number One for everybody.There were different kinds of games such as chariot races (especially popular with female spectators) or wild-beast fights where lions tigers bulls or bears were set on one another or even on human beings. Most popular however were the Gladiator fights. In ‘Bread and Games’ William Vean depicts one of the many fights in the antique Colosseum. 1. Entrance of the Gladiators: By powerful bugle-calls the attention of the peoplewas asked for after which the Gladiators entered the Arena at the sound of heroic marching-music.2.Swordfight: We can hear that the fights were not mere child’s play in this part.On the contrary they were a matter of life and death and were fought accordingly.3.Mercy of the Emperor: Sometimes a wounded gladiator could be fortunate depending on the mercy of the audience. Waving one’s handkerchief meant mercy a turned-down thumb meant no pardon. The Emperor had the right to take the final decision but he usually complied with the wish of the majority of the public. 4.Lap of Honour: Gladiators were mainly selected among slaves convicted criminals or prisoners of war. Consequently winning was very important as it would mean fame honour and sometimes even wealth. A lap of honour therefore was the winner’s due reward.

The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’. A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create and has catastrophic consequences. When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have. On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns. There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami such as the island of La Palma one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense. In the case of La Palma the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America where it may reach 50km inland destroying everything on its way. In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending. Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster. Themes are interrupted broken off suddenly followed by silence suggesting the calm before the storm. Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves. After nature’s force has spent itself resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

La musique folk irlandaise est à la base de cette nouvelle uvre.Dans la première partie le thème principal est présenté comme une ballade commençant avec le piccolo (pour remplacer la fl?te à bec soprano que lon retrouve souvent en Irlande) passant à tous les bois puis à lensemble de lorchestre.On passe ensuite à un style plus rock : un accompagnement soutenu et rythmé avec des effets dans les sourdines un point dorgue et lutilisation des cuillers du bongo aigu (remplace le bodhran) etc. si caractéristiques de la musique irlandaise (pub irlandais).Dans cette deuxième partie jai inséré en contrepartie un deuxième thème joué par les divers groupes dinstruments. Ce thème aclairement un caractère plus legato et est par conséquent plus mélodieux.Le climax de luvre commence dans les cuivres graves avec leur thème marcato élaboré avec une grande rythmique dans laccompagnement les clusters etc. et va vers un solo de percussions avec des orchestrations en 5/8 avec de nombreux mouvements parallèles dans les accords (style de la musique folk).Vers la fin le deuxième thème revient à deux reprises : une fois comme il a déjà été entendu avec plus de contre-mélodie et de modèle daccompagnement ensuite sous une forme canonique dans laquelle trois groupes jouent le thème dans un mélange harmonieux. La fin est une répétition de la partie centrale en 5/8.Jai essayé dexploiter bon nombre des couleurs dun orchestre philharmonique en faisant jouer les cuivres et les bois seuls et en utilisant de nombreuses sourdines. De plus les percussions jouent un rôle de premier plan dans lensemble de luvre.

Apart from the above-mentioned themes of Goldfinger and Octopussy, he has also added to his name the themes of Thunderball, From Russia with Love, Moonraker and Diamonds areForever. He also wrote the music for other famous films such as The Deep, Midnight Cowboy, Born Free and Out of Africa.

LAméricain Duke Ellington (1889- 1974) a été pianiste chef dorchestre compositeur et arrangeur et a connu un grand succès. Son orchestre existe depuis des dizaines dannées et a pu survivre grâce aux énormes tubes que ses collaborateurs et lui-m?me ont écrits. Bon nombre de ces titres font aujourdhui partie du répertoire standard des jazzmen.Billy Strayhorn(1915- 1967) a rejoint lorchestre en 1939 en qualité darrangeur et de compositeur et a notamment écrit Take the A- train qui dès 1941 devient la chanson favorite de lorchestre. Il en existe dailleurs de nombreuses versions.Juan Tizol (1900- 1984 trombone à pistons) a joué aux côtés de Duke Ellington pendantpratiquement toute sa carrière et a composé des titres latin pour lorchestre. Il est le co-compositeur de Caravan et Perdido.Tout comme dans les concerts originaux de Duke Ellignton le medley commence par take the A- train suivi par toute une série de classiques extraits du répertoire du légendaire orchestre. Certains titres laissent entendre des solistes avec en point dorgue un solo de timbales sur C-Jam Blues. Ce solo peut éventuellement aussi ?tre improvisé.Quiconque travaille ce morceau se doit daccorder une grande attention aux basses et percussions qui forment la section de rythme et poussent lorchestre. Les autres sections doivent ?tre solides et créer un effet de swing cohérent. Le swing ne peut ?tre trop anguleux et peut varier dun titre à lautre. Dans In a sentimental mood par exemple la mélodie peut ?tre jouée de manière quasi rectiligne (classique) tandis que la section de rythme maintient le swing.

The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the ?Laguna del Shimbe? one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream.2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It?s a proud beautiful andindependent race which has never succumbed to domination not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish fruit plants ... . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways.3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning ?picture? ?soul? ?essence?. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. ?Everywhere the white man goes he leaves a wilderness behind him? wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone 80 tribes have vanished completely).4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water painted with redpaint and covered with feathers after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound.5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by amongst others the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez who murdered in 1988 was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped.
