Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programme note: In 1983 Hans Abrahamsen wrote the first seven of his Ten Studies for Piano. In the early eighties most composers who wrote for the piano were still making strenuous efforts to distance themselves from the instrument?s romantic past for example treating it as a percussion instrument rather than exploiting its expressive ?singing? potential. The piano?s modern identity as a mechanical rational emotionally cool instrument is reflected in Abrahamsen?s studies 5 7; but in the first four studies Abrahamsen allows the piano to?recollect? its past: especially what the composer calls ?the golden German romantic time full of expression night timelessness dream and the irrational?. Accordingly these first four studies were given German one might specifically say Schumanesque - titles: Traumlied (?Dreamsong?) Sturm (?Storm?) Arabeske (?Arabesque?) and Ende (?End?). While Abrahamsen was in no way dissatisfied with the first four Studies as piano music he soon felt the urge to expand them in both time and space. In their new identity as Four Pieces for Orchestra created between 2000-2003 the original studies nearly doubled in length while the forces required expanded from one soloist to an orchestra of Mahlerian/Straussian dimensions including instruments beloved by the late-romantics: Wagner tubas bass trumpet guitar mandolin and the hammer used so memorably in Mahler?s Sixth Symphony and Alban Berg?s Three Pieces for Orchestra. The results are not so much ?arrangements? of the four piano studies more recompositions. A helpful comparison might be made with certain painters: Cézanne portraying the same mountain from different angles; or Monet obsessively returning to Rouen Cathedral in different lights and weather conditions. Abrahamsen himself remembers an important visit to the Munch Museum in Oslo where he saw how Munch painted the same subject

Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 4 (1981) - Indischer Roosengaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee (Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See). Programme Note: This symphony in two movements entitles “Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee” was inspired by Adolf Wölfli’s works - consisting of 20.000 pages of prose poetry and pictures -. An English translation of the title would read: “Symphony no. 4 - Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See; after an idea by Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) and dedicated to him.” Wölfli was from 1895 (31 yearsold) until his death in 1930 confined to the mental hospital at Waldau near Bern Switzerland. Although he had no technical knowledge of music he considered himself to be a great composer and his paintings were almost always covered with long festoons of six-lined (!) music staffs. In 1912 Wölfli ordered paints and paper for a planned ´Musikbüchlein´ which was to be published in 1920 under the title “Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee”. (Wölfi uses his characteristic illustrative phonetic spellings with double vowels). The work was never completed and I took it upon myself to realize Wölfli’s idea according to his vision but of course within my own preconditions. The double and suggestive title is typical of Wölfli´s polarized conception of the world which shifts between idyll and catastrophe. This polarization is of almost Chinese nature in that no idyll exists without catastrophic disturbances just as there is a black “spot” in the white “fish” and vice versa in the famous Yin/Yang symbol. One might explain this idea with a quote by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun: “A prisoner on his tumbrel is wheeled to the scaffold. A nail chafes at his behind; he moves over and feels more

Benet Casablancas was inspired by a passage of John Milton?s ?Paradise Lost? and its further interpretation by the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa in order to name one of his key works Darkness Visible. The versatile use of the Orchestra as well as the great timbral and textural differentiation may prevail as structure to this work. Moreover the way Benet Casablancas formulates the harmonic thought and its involvement in the development of his discourse seem to be a more crucial characteristic of Darkness Visible. This work deepens into the exploration of the unfathomable mystery of the night. It is conceived as a nocturne of big proportions that goes near quiet and rarefied atmospheres but is punctually disturbed by more agitated passages suddenly illuminated by gleams of light.

Includes original version of the Sinfonia BWV 1046a. Authoritative Urtext edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.1 in F major BWV 1046. The six Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1051 prized jewels of the world's musical heritage were written in 1721 during Bach?s appointment in Cöthen. Of the six works Bach originally wrote earlier versions of numbers 1 and 5 which differ not only with regard to articulation but also at times different tones different rhythms instrumentation and of course form. These Urtext publications [BA 5201-BA 5206] taken from the New Bach Edition now giveperformers the possibility to play these earlier versions perhaps even alongside the version known today. In the earlier version of Concerto No.1 (BWV 1046a) which according to the editor of the edition Heinrich Besseler seems to have been Bach?s favourite among the six there is no Violino Piccolo part to be found and the Violin concerto-like 3rd movement as well as the Polonaise movement are also absent. In nearly every bar the articulation in one instrument or another differs from the later version; for example the 16th-note slurs in bars 1 and 2 of the Horns are missing in the later score the Oboe slurs and trills in m.12 are also not to be found. The later version has the Cello separated from the Continuo which means that the 16ths in m.7 are not to be played by the Violone grosso.

Britta Byström's Trumpet Concerto No.2 Screen Memories for Trumpet solo and Orc...(+)
Britta Byström's Trumpet Concerto No.2 Screen Memories for Trumpet solo and Orchestra (2012). Trumpet solo part: WH31514B Dedicated to Tine Thing Helseth. Premiered February 28 2013 by the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and Tine Thing Helseth conducted by Johannes Gustavsson at Stadshuset in Sundsvall Sweden. Programme note Screen Memories is the English translation of a Freudian term (Deckerinnerung is the original German term). In Swedish it is called 'täckminnen'. The term means strong but seemingly meaningless childhoodmemories as 'cover' for substantial memory. The title is something of a pun as the work is based on the composition Voyage Into the Golden Screen (1968-69) by Danish composer Per Nørgård – a modern classic in which Nørgård presents his compositional technique known as the infinity series. The technique which I freely apply in the “Trumpet Concerto” enables the development of an endless melody! In that sense “Screen Memories” adapts a second understanding: memories of the composition of Nørgård. Nørgård in turn adopted the title from a song by British songwriter Donovan – the first phrase of this song is in my trumpet concerto. It is dedicated to Susan Bradshaw. The first performance was given by the commissioners conducted by Günther Bauer Schenk on 5 November 1985 in the Queen Elizabeth Hall London.Geranos is in three movements of nearly equal length (fast-slow-fast) playedwithout a break and preceded by a quiet introduction which is repeated in slightly modified form at the very end of the work. The chord used in the introduction dictates the material throughout the piece. The third movement?shadows? the first. The slow movement is sub-tilted ?Adonida? the name of a lament for Adonis who was also known as ?Gingras?. Women bearing images of Adonis and expressing the utmost grief proceeded through the streets singing and dancing to the accompaniment of the aulos gingras.

Between 1996 and 2000 Bärenreiter published scholarly-critical editions of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies edited by the first class musicologist Jonathan Del Mar. The editorial process was a huge undertaking because of the complex source situation regarding Beethoven's Symphonies culminating in the Choral Symphony which came down to us in nearly 20 different sources. So it was not surprising that Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition caused a considerable stir in the music world. Since publication, Del Mar's edition enjoys the unabashed praise of conductors, performers and critics alike and has become the most widely used publication of the Beethoven Symphonies which can be heard not only every day in concert halls, but also on CD recordings by John Eliot Gardiner, David Zinman, Jos van Immerseel and Claudio Abbado. - A new reference set of Beethoven?s Symphonies for students, conductors and libraries Edition no.: BA 9000 ISMN: 9790006540952 Editor: Del Mar, Jonathan Language(s) of text: German, English Product format: Score, Anthology, Urtext edition Includes the following individual parts: Orchestra Binding: in a slipcase Pages / Format: 1186 S. - 32,2 x 25,0 cm
