Oper In Drei Bildern-This masterpiece composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold when he was only 23 was one of the great stage successes of the 1920s and 30s before being removed from theatre schedules by the National Socialists. Rediscovered in the 1970s it has enjoyed continuing popularity ever since. The libretto was compiled by the composer?s father the music critic Julius Korngold writing under the pseudonym ?Paul Schott? a combination of the name of the protagonist and the publishing house. A vivacious theatre group comes to liven up the gloomy city of Bruges (here a symbol of death) and the widower Paul is forced to decide between the past and the present.Korngold was fascinated by this symbolic plot and created an iridescent orchestral score washed in vivid colours. A variety of operatic devices are intermingled as if viewed through a kaleidoscope: opulent melodic arias advanced harmonies psychoanalytic profundity and cinematic transitions oscillating between reality and dream worlds guarantee the continuing modernity of this work up to the present day.

One of the most memorable and beautiful melodies ever written by Tschaikowsky has now been arranged for school groups by Merle Isaac. A medium-advanced work, of course, but well worth the necessary preparation. (4:48)

The Roads Round Pisa - A Gothic Tale for 10 players - was composed in 2013 by Danish composer Niels Marthinsen. Marthinsen does not care particularly for traditional genre divisions and his music interweaves solid classical instrumentation with virtually all types of popular music held together by a clear sense of line and an advanced sense of musical form and timing.

In the early years of our century when vital new forces were revolutionising the arts Russian-born Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) was one of the visionary pioneers who sought a new musical language. At least a full decade before the advances of Stravinsky and Schoenberg Scriabin had begun the process of a complete break with all musical conventions. By 1905 he was immersed in a search for a way to express in sound the mystical and theosophical ideas obsessed him. Scriabin’s last two orchestral works were the products of a virtual delirium of composing. Simultaneously refining his poem called Poem of Ecstasy andcompleting the symphony that grew out of it (and shared its name) Scriabin never forgot the rapture of composing this work about creation and self-fulfilment: “I gasp for breath but oh what bliss! The very meter kindles the meaning…” Prometheus: Poem of Fire – Scriabin’s last and most revolutionary symphony – portrays Man’s epic journey from the mists of beginning time to a wonderous self-realisation given the gift of fire and light to make creative vision possible. Massively scored Prometheus incorporates a “colour Organ” to bathe the performance space in a vast interplay of coloured lights. For the music professional and every student of composition orchestration and conducting both scores are strikingly original and instructive. Equally fascinating are Scriabin’s approach to composition the extraordinary sonorities of his orchestra and his fanciful often supercharged performance instructions that replace conventional words for tempo mood and expression.

Dès le début, j'ai considéré la possibilité d'effectuer avec des orchestres amateurs.' Michael a ajouté 4 pièces plus courtes à cette danse (Introduzione, Elegie, Bicinium, Kanon).
