Authoritative Urtext edition of Johann Sebastien Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.3 In G Major BWV 1048. The six Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1051 prized jewels of the world's musical heritage were written in 1721 during Bach?s appointment in Cöthen. Of the six works Bach originally wrote earlier versions of numbers 1 and 5 which differ not only with regard to articulation but also at times different tones different rhythms instrumentation and of course form. These Urtext publications [BA 5201-BA 5206] taken from the New Bach Edition now give performers the possibility to play these earlier versions perhaps even alongside theversion known today.

Trois Esquisses Symphoniques-New Urtext edition with numerous corrections in comparison to other editions.Important sources which were previously inaccessible have been taken into account.Following the recent publication of the full score and performance material to Debussy?s La Mer (BA 7880) Bärenreiter now presents the study score edition of this ?impressionistic? masterpiece. The new scholarly-critical edition draws on several important sources previously unavailable to musicologists resulting in an array of new readings and corrections. In addition there are many changes especially in terms of articulation and dynamics. This new editionincludes the famous ?fanfare? in Movement III clearly marked in small print and brackets. This fanfare was excised in the 1910 reissue of the work but was reinstated by a number of great conductors who knew Debussy i.e. Monteux Münch Mitropoulos and Ansermet. They felt that the excision was a misunderstanding and that the fanfare was necessary for the structure of the movement. And so the Bärenreiter edition presents the revival of a performing tradition which is committed to the fanfare.

(+)
Per Nørgård's Tidsrum / Spaces Of Time for Orchestra with obligate Piano dating from 1991. Programme Note Spaces of time is a 20-minute long one-movement orchestral piece “with piano” signifying that the piano not only as in my other orchestra works is part of the ensemble but also in a major passage attracts almost all attention. This passage is only one of the ´spaces of time´- spaces which give the work its title and represent individual musical perspectives. Relations of tempo and scale characterize such a space (besides the mentioned“piano-concerto” or other intrumental features) and in this way associate with say a small room - with close-ups of the musical objects - or perhaps to an infinitely great space - a cosmic one where all is far away and vibrating. One motive marked mainly by ascending stepwise movement unifies the spaces but the very varied scales may let the outines of the motive change between say 1/4-tone steps 1/2-tone steps diatonic and other scale steps up to such ambient steps that each one comprises almost a third of the total orchestral range. Very often 2 scales are woven together in a way that lets the “hidden tone” inside a major step in one of the scaels become a part of the other scale. By dynamic means one scale may be highlighted as a “figure” the other one as a “ground” in one passage - and vice versa. In this way a 12-tone chromatic scale may as well contain a Japanese 5-tone scale as a European 7-tone scale. In the final “space” the tones literally take leave of the listeners - by streaming down - as water sucked down into the ground by gravity - into the bass octaves and - into silence. Spaces of time was comissioned by “Suntory Hall” in 1990-91 (artistic director Toro Takemitsu) in October 1991 with Aki Takahashi (piano)

Scholarly critical edition with many corrections in the score and orchestral parts. Clear presentation of orchestral parts in an enlarged format 25.5 cm x 32.5 cm. ?Prélude A L?Aprés-Midi D?Un Faune? often referred to as the first composition of the ?modern? era is one of Debussy?s most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. The piece comes down to us in an array of sources and several important ones are drawn upon for the first time in Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical edition. Most of the currently available editions are based on the first edition from 1895 which however contains many engravererrors. When the corresponding orchestral parts are also taken into consideration countless discrepancies are revealed. Bärenreiter?s Urtext edition incorporates readings of a printed copy of the score from c. 1908 which shows corrections and emendations by the composer. These important changes found in no other source include metronome markings different pitches and additional notes as well as added tempo and articulation markings which all subtly enhance Debussy?s finely sculpted work. There is even a breath mark added to the famous solo flute passage which opens the work.

The première of Daudet's play L'Arlésienne with incidental music by Bizet given at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on 30 September 1872 was a devastating event for both playwright and composer and the production was removed from the repertory after 19 performances. The critic Johannès Weber however was alert to the quality of Bizet's score and suggested that the composer should excerpt and rescore several pieces for the Concerts populaires where 'the lovely music would be better appreciated than at the Vaudeville'. Bizet must have moved rather quickly to follow Weber's suggestion for the première of the first Arlésienne suitetook place only six weeks later at the Concerts populaires on 10 November 1872 and the work in its new abridged form was soon taken up by many other orchestras. Bizet however did not turn to preparing a second suite from L'Arlésienne. Some four years after Bizet's death the success of the first suite may have prompted his original publisher to commission the arrangement of more excerpts from the Arlésienne MS from Bizet's good friend Ernest Guiraud who had earlier written recitatives and put together a ballet for Carmen.

Commissioned by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Choir / DR. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk About Entropia: This orchestral work is chiefly an attempt to make a musical investigation into the complex question of the nature of time. The viewpoint taken on a philosophical level is chiefly inspired by the brilliant thinker and philosopher of time J.F. Fraser. The main conclusion of his investigation of the subject is in very short that the onlyadequate view to take of time as a phenomenon with all the knowledge that we have today is that time must be seen as a conflict or at least an interference between many different “temporal levels” (...) Based on the Critical Edition- Orchestra material on hire. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The large-scale form of 'Symphony No. 9' is unusual in a number of ways. It reminds in no way of the ninth symphonies of famous predecessors. Two slow movements, an Andante comodo at the beginning and an Adagio at the end, form the frame for two of the most parodistic and embittered inner movements that Mahler ever wrote - a ländler-waltz combination, and the 'Rondo-Burleske', a bitter, ironic movement that is derisively dedicated 'to my brothers in Apollo'. The most extraordinary part of Mahler's last completed symphony must certainly be the slow finale - a 20-minute long intensively singing movement laden with conflict that includes references to earlier works by Mahler, in slow motion as it were ('Urlicht',' Ablösung im Sommer', the 'Scherzo of Symphony No. 3', 'Der Abschied' from 'Das Lied von der Erde', and 'Oft denk' ich, sie sind nur ausgegangen' from the 'Kindertotenlieder'); it indeed seems that a circle is being closed. (Reinhold Kubik) Universal Edition continues its new study score standard. These completely redesigned scores offer an unparalleled insight into the music of the last hundred years. Great care has been taken to select the best available content for this journey through music history, and every score has been edited according to the latest quality standards./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Coriolan Ouverture op. 62-Urtext edition study score for Ludwig Van Beethoven's Coriolan Overture Op.62.Beethoven's Coriolan Overture Op.62 was inspired by the tragic legend of the Ancient Romanhero Coriolanus. This story enjoyed popularity in the early 1800s as the subject of a play by the Austrian writer Heinrich Joseph von Collin. By the time that Beethoven composed this overture in 1807 however the playhad long since been taken off the programme. Apparently it no longer mattered to the composer whether his music was performed in conjunction with the play or not and he thus wrote one of the earliest and to-date best-lovedconcert overtures in musical history. The text of the Beethoven Complete edition was carefully reviewed for this Henle Urtext study edition and there is a new preface.

Ballet-Bernstein’s first composition in the genre Fancy Free composed in 1944 became extremely popular. The story of the ballet is fairly simple and was later reused by Bernstein in On The Town his popular first Broadway musical. The story devised by Jerome Robbins takes place in New York City where three sailors on shore leave meet three girls in a bar who they dance with and end up fighting over. They soon realize they were foolish to let the women become between their friendships. The music is based on a considerable number of popular styles of the day. At the beginning you hear Big Stuff a popular hit Bernstein later recordedas a single and made famous by Billie Holiday. Bernstein’s music is comprised of a fusion of different genres from Latin-American to Popular and Classical to Jazz all of which are footprints in his inimitable style.Available here as part of the Hawkes Pocket Score edition (No.1135) is the Study Score for Bernstein’s popular ballet Fancy Free.

Dramma per musica in thre acts-Rodelinda Regina de' Longobardi HWV 19; Opera in three acts. After Giulio Cesare and Tamerlano Rodelinda is the third masterly opera that Handel composed between December 1723 and January 1725. The words were written by Nicola Haym the author of many other Handel librettos. The first performance took place at the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket London on 13 February 1725. Rodelinda thrives entirely on the ethical supremacy of conjugal love and thus prefigures the great operas by Gluck and Beethoven on the same subject. The plot is taken from the history of the Lombard royalty. Oskar Hagen’s revival of Rodelinda in 1920 ushered in the modern Handel operamovement. The work forms the climax to a series of dramatic masterpieces that includes Handel’s most significant operas. Handel returned to Rodelinda on two occasions in December 1725 and in May 1731. Many far-reaching changes were necessary owing to the different skills of the new singers. For example Handel wrote three new arias and a duet for the first revival. Yet the changes he made for this performance doubtless to accommodate the needs and wishes of the singers also improve the work’s dramatic substance. Our vocal score is based on the Urtext of the full score published in the Halle Handel Edition (II/16) and reproduces the various alternative readings and versions in an appendix. Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition.U47 Full score (BA4064) & vocal score (BA4064-90) available for sale. Performance material (BA4064-72) available for hire

The composer writes:'My Symphony is in two movements which however are played without a break. Taken together they progress from the extremely high almost unison screams and glissandi of the opening via blurred melodic and swarming rhythmic formations towards the slow ending with its simple and more clearly out-lined melodic fragments. The designation 'symphony' is in this case much more a title than a genre indication. During my work on the piece I never considered having any other title than this magical and associative word: 'Symphony'.'

Miniature Score. This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was first performed on 13th May 1998 London. This piece is based on a genuine old tune 'Maxwell's Strathspey' which the composer found inan 1824 collection of Scottish melodies and which unfolds at the start of the piece on solo cello. Variations and a bold up-tempo to the quick dance we know as a reel ultimately yield to the magic that has been promised right atthe start: the northern lights take over at the end of the piece. Its inspiration comes from a walk to a community event in Hoy Hall during which Davies saw the lights in the sky pulsing in and out of time with the sounds comingfrom the hall. Duration 12 minutes. Conductor's score and orchestral parts are available on hire.

(+)
The word GONG is saturated with associations: the splendour of the Orient mysticism drama loud metallic clangour violent impact etc. The present piece draws upon all those connotations but it is primarily a symphonic drama about the life and behaviour of the sun our closest star and prime source of life on Earth. Describing the sun in music is not a new idea of course; during a visit to Greece Carl Nielsen was inspired by the orbit of the sun and its very un-Danish ferocity and thus wrote the 'Helios Overture'. GONG is a 'Helios Overture' too of sorts albeit more abstract. Recent astronomical research shows that the surface of the sun reverberates like a gong infour different simultaneous tempi (not directly depicted in the score though); the sun looks like a GONG - the O in the written work looks like the sun; there is even a solar research group called GONG (Global Oscillation Network Group). Formally the composition follows the life and fate of the sun from the initial explotional birth through the hyper-activity as energy source as we know it today to the final predicted flaring up and collapse into a so-called 'white dwarf'. But - being a musical composition not an astrophysical thesis - GONG is brought to its compositional conclusion by a 'real concert-ending' a chord taken from the middle of the piece and sustained over several bars from virtual nothingness to full force.

(+)
Couverture Rigide. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. For his Paris 'Cythère assiégée?, Gluck drew on his eponymous opéra comique from 1759, transforming it into an opéra-ballet. The libretto which was expanded by Charles Simon Favart was adapted: Gluck added recitative passages, reworked individual sections and also added his own compositions, modifying them in parts. By March 1775, the compositional work had progressed sufficiently for Gluck to leave behind a copy of the score as he departed from Paris. However, he was unable to supervise rehearsals or be present at the premiere (1 August 1775) or any of the subsequent 21 performances. Due to these particular circumstances, three versions of the work are to be distinguished: the original version, the performed version and the printed version. This edition of 'Cythère assiégée? contains the original version of the main part and is printed here for the first time. The reconstruction which was necessary in order to determine the original form of this opera draws on all orchestral parts, the printed score and with regard to a large gap in Act III, pages were taken from the score copy. The four-part appendix includes the changes made to this score copy, sections that deviate from the printed score as well as the final version of Act III, also from the printed score. The last part of the appendix also presents a Divertissement in six movements by Berton, which is only available as a rare contemporary set of printed parts. The Foreword offers detailed information regarding the work's genesis, subject matter, preparations for performance and print, premiere, reception, and this edition. Selected pages from significant musical sources, the libretto of the premiere performance, and images illuminating the performance context, have been added as facsimiles./ Répertoire / Conducteur
