Frigé-The Dixit Dominus RV 595 shares a key and some further characteristics with the better-known setting of the same psalm RV 594 but differs from it markedly: first in being scored for an undivided ensemble (i.e. not ?in due cori?): second in belonging to Vivaldi?s first period of sacred music composition around 1715 rather than to a later period. There are stylistic parallels too with Vivaldi?s two Gloria settings RV 588 and RV 589. Three of the eleven movements making up RV 595 use borrowed material which in two instances is taken from movements by unknown composers in Vivaldi?s own collection and in one instance (heavily disguised) from a published madrigal(1705) by Antonio Lotti. The borrowings are absorbed extremely well into the fabric of the setting and do not disrupt its well-unified character. Among the high points of RV 595 are its opening pair of moments ? the first bustling and the second poignantly reflective ? and the fourth movement ?Tecum principium? where two obbligato cellos enter into dialogue with two sopranos. This Dixit Dominus preserved uniquely in Prague ranks among Vivaldi?s finest large-scale sacred vocal compositions. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for this vocal score are based on the Critical Edition by Michael Talbot published in 1993.

This work possibly commissioned by Prince-Bishop Sigismund Christoph von Schrattenbach was assigned to three Salzburg composers: W. A. Mozart (part 1) Michael Haydn (part 2) and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (part 3). Only the manuscript of part 1 has survived. Here Mozart drew heavily on the Salzburg tradition of church music and school dramas perhaps taking Johann Ernst Eberlin and even his father Leopold as his models. The first performance took place in the Knights’ Hall of the prince’s palace on 12 March 1767. The libretto was supplied by Ignaz Anton Weiser (1701 1785) town councillor and mayor of Salzburg. Mozart wrote out many of theappoggiaturas in this early work thereby providing a useful guide to the vocal practices of his day. Aria No.2 has come down to us with an instructive passage in which the Vocal part is ornamented in the hand of Leopold Mozart.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio St. Paul Op.36 in 1836 at the age of twenty-seven. The first version which was premiered on 22 May 1836 was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version which at the same time served as the basis for the published version was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham. The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner who later denigrated Mendelssohn was full of admiration. Today St. Paul belongs to the core repertoire of sacred choral music.This Urtext edition of the oratorio edited by the internationally-recognised Mendelssohn scholar Michael Cooper is based on all critical sources. As well as the principal version of the work the score also includes for the first time numbers which were composed for the first version and subsequently removed.
