This is a wonderful chart, an old tune in a new dress, as only Bill Holman can do it. It's the exact chart as recorded by the terrific Charlie Barnet Big Band. The tempo is bright, a swinging excursion into the clever writing of Holman. Solo space for piano, alto, tenor, trumpet, and drums. There is a great sax section soli and the usual, wonderful, roaring ensemble shout choruses. A big finish ends an amazing chart. 5-5-4-4 (4 tpts. work just as well).

Much like Neil Hefti's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers original exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout section before returning to the quieter approach. This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Count Basie's Finest Hour (originally Basie Land). Set as a medium-slow swing feel, there are solos for trumpet and piano. In this edited version, the arrangement is almost exactly like the original, except the solos are written out, the high trumpet parts are adjusted, and the saxophone parts have been simplified a bit. 5-4-4-4.

Here is a slow, gutty, down-home type of blues written for and recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the Adventures In Blues album. There is open solo space for tenor, trumpet and piano. Once the solos are over, the full ensemble comes roaring in to take the chart to a strong, sensational ending. Your audiences will love this tune! 5-5-5-3.

This arrangement by Bob Curnow is based on Johnny Richards' original composition written for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, which was part of the Adventures In Time album. This version is easier to play without losing the original character of the piece. Most of the piece is in 9/8 at a moderate tempo. There are solos for tenor saxophone, trumpet and piano, with a wonderful, written-out piano solo in the beginning. Trumpet ranges are quite reasonable.5-5-5-3.

Billy Byers, known for his wildly successful arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra, provided them with some of their best music ever performed and recorded. Originally recorded on the album Frankly Basie, 'South of the Border' has it all - Basie piano solos (written out), roaring ensemble passages, a swinging saxophone soli, and some compelling key changes. Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano. There is plenty of room for improvisation with soloists of your choice, including space for your drummer and any other percussion you might choose to add. The ending of the piece is wild and always brings audiences to their feet! 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes).
