Choral SATB choir, piano SKU: PR.312418710 A Brief Meditation On The D...(+)
Choral SATB choir, piano SKU: PR.312418710 A Brief Meditation On The Devil's Verse. Composed by Richard Wernick. -. Secular choral. Performance Score. With Standard notation. Composed 2011. 8 pages. Duration 4 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #312-41871. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.312418710). ISBN 9781598066265. UPC: 680160618743. Octavo inches. The Devil's Verse. To celebrate 25 years of excellence and promotion of new concert works, the New York Virtuoso Singers commissioned 25 contemporary composers for 25 new choral works, all of which now appear on their recording, 25 X 25: Twenty-Five Premieres for Twenty-Five Years. Among the 25 is Richard Wernick's The Devil's Game. Here, Wernick uses The Devil's Verse, a Latin palindrome that still puzzles us today as to its meaning, and appropriately embraces repetitive use of the verse in a musical palindrome of his own. The text is a palindrome (in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni), a rather mysterious one called The Devil’s Verse. Its origin is vague (probably Roman, but possibly Medieval) and it does not surrender its meaning easily; many scholars have fussed over it. It is a riddle as well as a palindrome, in other words a puzzle within a puzzle. My preferred translation, without going into the niceties of Latin grammar, is “We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire.â€This music is also a palindrome, the outer parts of which are homophonic, while the turning around point in the center (where the basses enter for the first time) is a brief double canon. $2.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks
| At the Cross Choral SATB - Easy GIA Publications
SATB choir, voice solo, piano accompaniment - Early intermediate SKU: GI.G-10...(+)
SATB choir, voice solo, piano accompaniment - Early intermediate SKU: GI.G-10552 Arranged by Christin Kieckhafer. Good Friday. Choral. Sacred. Octavo. 16 pages. GIA Publications #10552. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-10552). English. Text Source: Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed?, Isaac Watts, 1674-1748, alt., At the Cross, Ralph E. Hudson, 1843-1901, alt. Text by Isaac Watts. “At the Cross†contains the very rich texts of Isaac Watts and Ralph Hudson. My desire is to treat each verse with utmost respect by highlighting—through music—the suffering, shame, hope, beauty, and glory of the cross. The cross embodies all of these attributes. You will notice there is a somberness that begins at m. 84, mirroring the darkness that ensued while Christ hung on the cross (Mark 15:33). A “darker†sound from the altos is encouraged. This is the turning point in the song, preparing the singers for the response to such a sacrifice. Although the text speaks of grief and debt (starting at m. 93), one can see the hope that builds, with the realization that complete surrender is the only response to such a sacrifice. Much thought and energy (under control) should be expended to aid this verse in building to the climactic point of the song, when hope is found in the cross and the burden has been lifted. $2.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Edited by Reinhold Kubik. Arranged by Paul Horn. German title: Jesus schlaft. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Epiphany. Choral Score. Composed 1724. BWV 81. 2 pages. Duration 19 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.081/05. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3108105). ISBN 9790007045432. Key: E minor. Language: German/English. Bach composed the cantata Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps, what hope have I] BWV 81 for the fourth Epiphany Sunday, 1724. The cantata is structured as a little drama: In the beginning, fear prevails. The seas rage and Jesus is asleep. The threateningly foaming waves are vividly depicted in the soughing string accompaniment of the tenor aria. Jesus's words Ihr Kleinglaubigen, warum seid ihr so furchtsam? [You of little faith, why are you so fearful?] are set as a bass arioso at the center of the cantata; they provide the turning point. In the subsequent bass aria, the towering seas are silenced. A recitative - Wohl mir [Well for me] - leads into the closing chorale with its certainty Unter deinen Schirmen bin ich vor den Sturmen aller Feinde frei [Under Your protection I am spared the tempests of my enemies]. Score available separately - see item CA.3108100. $2.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
