Jon Washburn Choral Series-Don MacDonald's Last Night Of Stars features an original profound text by the composer that describes a child in her bed at night staring out of her high-rise window at a view obscured by a thickhaze her bedroom flooded with sounds from the city. Such a child may turn out to be the voice that brings about the changes needed to remedy our relationship with the planet. This beautiful and hopeful text is set in aunique somewhat jazzy style for SATB choir.

All I Ask Of You is the love song that triggers the Phantom of The Opera's jealous campaign of retribution in Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical - Cliff Richard and Sarah Brightman took it for a spin in 1986 and had a hit single. Big Spender became even more popular than the 1966 musical from which it came - 'Sweet Charity' - and Shirley Bassey did much to popularise it later. Written specifically for Colm Wilkinson, Bring Him Home is the emotional song from Act II of Les Misérables while I Have A Dream is a no less emotional Abba number that is included in the record-breaking stage musical Mamma Mia. Last Night Of The World is the haunting dance hall song from Miss Saigon that marks the fateful promise made by the US airman to take Kim with him when he leaves Vietnam. This volume in the Novello Choral Pops collection contains all five of these musical theatre favourites, arranged for SATB Choir with Piano accompaniment. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Piano

Richard Allain's Night for SATB and Cello. Night Was commissioned by Commotio and recieved its premiere in Merton College Oxford in June 2007 conducted by Matthew Berry and is available on the Herald label (HAVP340). Composer's Note: Given the long phrase lengths of Night it is suggested that choirs Stagger breathing where necessary. The last page of the score requires some explanation. The singers should split into three separate groups: two equal SATB choirs and an SATB solo quartet. Each group sings their own music - each repetition being separated by a long pause - independent of the othergroups. Thus Choir I will begin and as they finish Choir II will commence etc. The music should continue for about two minutes getting gradually quieter with each repetition. Though a common pulse should be kept the groups begin each repetition as they wish: the music should overlap and blur. Against this the solo Cello plays its fragments of melody. The choirs at the conductor's discretion should end in the order they began leaving the cello to play its last notes as the echoes fade. Duration: 20 minutes

Vincent Novello was a British composer and Organist who gave the Novello publishing company its first embryonic form. Here he arranges Rule Britannia! for Voice SATB with Piano accompaniment to introduce some contrapuntal interest in the verse. When 18th century British composer Thomas Arne included his song Rule Britannia! in a masque based on the life of Alfred the Great that was presented at Cliveden the country home of Frederick Prince of Wales he could not have imagined that more than two hundred seventy years later his ditty would be known throughout the British Isles and beyond. Rule Britannia! is widely used in the Royal Navy and British Army and is featuredeach year at the Last Night of the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall as a national sing-along.At the time of writing the Dutch actually ‘ruled the waves ’ so this song was more an exhortation than a status report. The lyrics were also a statement of civil liberty. Since Cromwell’s time Britain had had a standing army which could be turned against the native population. A standing navy however existed solely to protect the nation from invaders protecting a free populace.

When the BBC commissioned this work for the Last Night of the Proms 2018 I was ...(+)
When the BBC commissioned this work for the Last Night of the Proms 2018 I was given quite a detailed brief. First the work should be for the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus (with the BBC Symphony Orchestra) and the two choirs should be quite independent of each other. Secondly the words should acknowledge the centenary of the end of World War I but look optimistically to the future. For the centenary I chose In the Underworld by World War I poet Isaac Rosenberg written in 1914. Originally about unrequited love it can read if you do not know its context as a prophetic look at the next four years with the sense that the women left at home cannot begin tocomprehend the horrors their men face in the trenches. The BBC Singers represent Rosenberg and their music is based on a beautiful Ashkenazi-Jewish prayer mode â?? also known as the â??Ukrainian Gypsyâ?? mode. While I was reading The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran (written in 1923) I came across these lines which seem to answer and assuage the fears expressed in Rosenbergâ??s poem. The BBC Symphony Chorus take on the role of Gibran singing in a beautiful melismatic Maronite Syriac chant into which faith Gibran was born in Lebanon. Later in his life he became very interested in Islam particularly Sufism; therefore the whole piece is in the form of a Sufi Zikr with Sufi devotional rhythms in the percussion starting quiet and low but slowly becoming higher faster and louder. The two choirs start separately but merge into a â??conversation â?? sometimes overlapping and ending on a positive note: Rosenbergâ??s Creature of light and happiness over Gibranâ??s We shall build a tower in the sky. Quite by accident all three Abrahamic faiths are represented in this piece â?? but as Kahlil Gibran famously said: â??You are my brother and I love you. I love you when you prostrate yourself in your mosque and kneel in your church and pray in your synagogue. You and I are sons of one faith â?? the Spirit.'

Vocalise-Will Todd born in 1970 is forging a strong reputation for himself as a composer who is equally at ease in opera oratorio church music and jazz. His style is instantly accessible and lastingly memorable. He spent his formative years steeped in both jazz and the English choral tradition so in his choral music he is able to juxtapose strong rhythmic drive and rich harmonies with exquisitely lyrical vocal lines.'Angel Song II' is inspired by the idea of angels singing on Christmas night. The music weaves a gentle melody over the aleatoric textures of the accompanying voices. The text is designed to create the echo of the word 'Hosanna' butwith no consonants so that the music feels as if it comes from 'on high'.'

Paul Mealor's Behold A Tender Babe is a work for Unaccompanied SATB Choir commissioned by the Hauser-Oberschneider family to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Summer Fields School. The work sets extracts from Robert Southwell's 'In Freezing Winter Night' and lasts around 4 minutes. A review in the September 2016 issue of Organist's Review states that the 'music responds sensitively and dramatically to the lines of the lyric it chooses to set rising triumphantly at the words 'with joy approach' before gently falling away as it repeatedly insists 'behold a tender babe'.' No less difficult but also no less rewarding is PaulMealor’s Behold a tender babe written a year earlier. But it is carefully written so that the difficulties are manageable. The two places where sopranos have a top C are the only points where sopranos divide so only the first sopranos ascend there. The music follows the details of the words with drama at ‘do homage to thy King’ and then falling away most beautifully to ‘behold a babe’. - Julian Elloway

Laboravi In Gemitu Meo by the Renaissance English composer and one of the principle members of the Madrigal School. This work expertly edited by Lionel Pike is arranged for unaccompanied SSAATB Chorus and lasts around 5 minutes. The text for Laboravi In Gemitu Meo comes from Psalm vi 6: 'I am weary of my groaning every night wash I my bed: and water my couch with my tears.' Composer Thomas Morley was the most famous composer of Secular music in Elizabethan England and was a contemporary of William Shakespeare. His use of the tritone interval in this work results in a sense ofunease something that resonates with the context of the piece: it was composed in retribution for informing on his fellow Catholics.
