The Music Medals series is designed for young/novice instrumentalists taught in a group situation offering an annual graded assessment beginning with the very basics. This set of ensemble pieces for guitarists is for the upper Gold level giving more difficult challenges in group performance. The pieces are specifically commissioned by the ABRSM to explore the skills needed to establish a strong start in ensemble playing.

A l'époque, je me souviens que les 'références' qui couraient en la matière n'avaient pas exactement déclenché d'intérêt ou d'enthousiasme particuliers de ma part (transcriptions un peu vagues d'oeuvres de Telemann, Vivaldi ou autres). Heureusement, le travail 'pointu' effectué en répétition sur l'espace sonore et la couleur, les timbres et les nuances eut bientôt raison de cette prime réticence, me laissant vite entrevoir l'immense champ de possibilités que pourrait bientôt offrir cette configuration instrumentale relativement neuve alors. Mais revenons à Côté Sud, ce 'faux' octuor enregistré déjà par de nombreux quatuors de guitare. De cette musique d'atmosphère où le soleil prédomine, on me dit souvent - ce dont je me réjouis - qu'elle obtient de vifs succès auprès du public. Mel Bay is pleased to present the long-awaited publication of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's 'loose' arrangement of the Pachelbel Canon for four Guitars. Originally intended as an inside joke for the LAGQ members this cleverand comical send-up of Pachelbel's beautiful (and somewhat overplayed) melody has become a standard LAGQ encore and an internet sensation. Featured in performance on the Mel Bay DVD LAGQ Live at the Sheldon this uniquearrangement presents the pristine Baroque theme and then adapts it in a number of unexpected musical styles: Reggae salsa bluegrass jazz flamenco disco and even punk. This is the only arrangement in the LAGQ repertoire thatwas a true group-project with all four members (John Dearman William Kanengiser Scott Tennant and Andrew York) contributing; as a special bonus new LAGQ member Matt Greif has added an alternative solo for the jazz section. Carefully notated to capture the nuances of LAGQ's stylistic flair the parts are presented in standard notation as well as in tablature for those less familiar with note-reading.
