Invisible Cities for Orchestra by Swedish composer Britta Byström (2013). Programme note: Invisible Cities is an orchestral piece inspired by the Italian writer Italo Calvino's novel 'Le città invisible' (1972). The novel consists of many short poetical descriptions of wondrous cities. This is what the explorer Marco Polo reports to Kublai Khan of what he has seen during his travels. Gradually though Kublai Khan begins to suspect that Marco Polo all the time describes one and the same city but in many different ways: Marco Polo's own hometownVenice. This was also my musical idea: to present the same motif in many different ways. The piece has eleven movements just as the novel consists of eleven different kinds of cities. Before every new musical 'city' there is a 'walk' – a little piano line which takes the listener from one city to another. This piano line is a quotation from Witold Lutoslawski'sVenetian Games. There are also other music connected to Venice hidden in my piece: the well-known Barcarolle by Offenbach and some fragments from Carnival in Venice. These references are the 'invisible cities' of my piece the material hidden under the music's surface. Marco Polo explains to Kublai Khan: 'To distinguish the other cities' qualities I must speak of a first city that remains implicit. For me it is Venice.' (c) Britta Byström Britta Byström’s careful ear for musical qualities such as timbre and resonance has resulted in an idiom that could almost be labeled impressionistic. She began composing already as a teenager and later studied composition at Musikhögskolan in Stockholm with Pär Lindgren and Bent Sørensen.

(+)
From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller Fischer Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture' whose name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have survived thanks to the diligence of C.F.Penzel a student at the Thomasschule from 1751 who made copies of Bach's MSS which he found there. Thus neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in D major recent criticism suggests that it mayoriginally have been written for strings only and dates in its final form from around 1731. Penzel's copy of the suite includes significant variants to be played by a solo violin (marked Violino Concertato) which are included here in the Appendices. The score is newly-edited from the extant sources consisting of sets of parts (some in Bach's autograph) and copyist's scores are preserved in the Staastbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbestitz Musikabteilung mit Mendelssohn-Archiv. This edition replaces the former Eulenburg miniature score edited by Wilhelm Altmann.

New Edition of the Complete Works V/5. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. In addition to his symphonies, Franz Schubert also wrote and handed down to posterity a total of eight finished concert overtures (two of them in two versions) between ca. 1811 and 1819. With the exception of the “Overture in D” (D 4) to the comedy “Der Teufel als Hydraulicus” (“The Devil as Engineer”) and the “Overture in D” (D 26), whose original title was cut out of the manuscript, they are all compositions which are associated neither with a drama nor a programme. They thus embody the type of the pure concert overture at an astonishingly early point in the history of music and are also in keeping with this terminologically by virtue of explicitly not having any other appellations whatsoever in the title: the epithet common for two works “in the Italian style” was only added posthumously. Our volume sees publication for the first time of the “Italian Overture in C” (D 591) in its two authentic versions, this being in contrast to the performance tradition based on a potpourri of the sources. The widely handed-down but corrupted musical course of the “Overture in D” (D 590) has likewise been rectified for the first time. Overshadowed by his symphonies, Schubert’s overtures have hitherto been largely undervalued both in their reception and in musical practice – including the “Overture in E minor” (D 648), which sees Schubert venturing into radically new spheres of expression to a greater extent than in virtually any other of his works./ Recueil / Orchestre

(+)
Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Score

The complete score of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Sinfonia No.99 In E Flat edited from the autograph authentic copies and early editions by H.C. Robbins Landon. This is the Full Orchestra Score composed in 1793 as the first of six symphonies written for Haydn’s second visit to England. It is a typically impressive symphony four movements full of musicality and excitement despite its characteristic slow opening. This piece is warm and expressive with a melancholy Adagio which seems to reflect the death of one of Haydn’s close friend earlier that year.

Palle Mikkelborg

Based on the Critical Edition- Orchestra material on hire. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The large-scale form of 'Symphony No. 9' is unusual in a number of ways. It reminds in no way of the ninth symphonies of famous predecessors. Two slow movements, an Andante comodo at the beginning and an Adagio at the end, form the frame for two of the most parodistic and embittered inner movements that Mahler ever wrote - a ländler-waltz combination, and the 'Rondo-Burleske', a bitter, ironic movement that is derisively dedicated 'to my brothers in Apollo'. The most extraordinary part of Mahler's last completed symphony must certainly be the slow finale - a 20-minute long intensively singing movement laden with conflict that includes references to earlier works by Mahler, in slow motion as it were ('Urlicht',' Ablösung im Sommer', the 'Scherzo of Symphony No. 3', 'Der Abschied' from 'Das Lied von der Erde', and 'Oft denk' ich, sie sind nur ausgegangen' from the 'Kindertotenlieder'); it indeed seems that a circle is being closed. (Reinhold Kubik) Universal Edition continues its new study score standard. These completely redesigned scores offer an unparalleled insight into the music of the last hundred years. Great care has been taken to select the best available content for this journey through music history, and every score has been edited according to the latest quality standards./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Orchestre

For Speaker And 5 Instrumentalists. Par SCHOENBERG ARNOLD. Pierrot lunaire marks the high point of Schoenberg's expressionistic period, the essence of which he described as renouncing tonal centers and systematic relationships, replacing them with the twelve-tone method he was later to develop, with its dodecaphonic principles. Dethroning tonality and 'emancipating the dissonance' led to a radical change in his understanding of form and the intensity of musical expression beginning in 1907/1908: 'And I am unconditionally approaching a new kind of expression - I can sense it. The sounds now are virtually becoming a bestially direct expression of sensual and intellectual feelings - almost as if everything had been directly propagated.' “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” “... written with ease, but skillfully refined” “Eine kleine NachtMusick” is how Mozart entered the Serenade in G major in his personal catalogue of works on 10 August 1787. It was written without any known incentive or commission during the time that Mozart was composing “Don Giovanni”, a time when he was celebrating his greatest success as an opera composer. The work is one of the jewels of Mozart’s output, combining bright radiance and a natural simplicity with brilliant refinement. Similarly, the autograph manuscript of this perfect masterpiece is captivating because of its balanced clarity and beautiful handwriting. The manuscript was inaccessible to the public for almost half a century, but now Bärenreiter has received exclusive permission to produce a new facsimile of Mozart’s original. The edition reproduces the facsimile pages as individual sheets and leaves, reflecting the way the original copy has survived. These pages – in high-quality colour printing, each trimmed individually – are presented in a handsome box. This is accompanied by a booklet with an introductory text by Wolfgang Rehm including information on the genesis of the composition and the various aspects of the autograph manuscript. “The fact that it’s all over town does not alter anything in the quality of this occasional piece written with ease but skillfully refined.” (Wolfgang Hildesheimer) BÄRENREITER FACSIMILE The seal is used exclusively for facsimile editions published by Bärenreiter which meet the highest demands in both scholarly and technical terms. Britta Byström's Trumpet Concerto No.2 Screen Memories for Trumpet solo and Orchestra (2012). Trumpet solo part: WH31514B Dedicated to Tine Thing Helseth. Premiered February 28 2013 by the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and Tine Thing Helseth conducted by Johannes Gustavsson at Stadshuset in Sundsvall Sweden. Programme note Screen Memories is the English translation of a Freudian term (Deckerinnerung is the original German term). In Swedish it is called 'täckminnen'. The term means strong but seemingly meaningless childhoodmemories as 'cover' for substantial memory. The title is something of a pun as the work is based on the composition Voyage Into the Golden Screen (1968-69) by Danish composer Per Nørgård – a modern classic in which Nørgård presents his compositional technique known as the infinity series. The technique which I freely apply in the “Trumpet Concerto” enables the development of an endless melody! In that sense “Screen Memories” adapts a second understanding: memories of the composition of Nørgård. Nørgård in turn adopted the title from a song by British songwriter Donovan – the first phrase of this song is in my trumpet concerto. And then there's a third musical reference: the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 'Pathetique'. I once heard it in concert while a massive rainstorm appeared and nearly drowned the music. A musical memory incorporated in the composition (the percussionist uses a “rain stick”). Screen Memories thus becomes a concert full of musical memories dressed in new clothes. It is written for and dedicated to the soloist Tine Thing Helseth whose soft and virtuoso

New York is the city which fascinates and inspires Ruders. Time and again he goes back there to work. 'Manhattan Abstraction' (1982) subtitles - a symphonic skyline for large orchestra - was conceived there. Ruders’ Brittish colleague Oliver Knussen defines the piece as: - a performance of an extraordinary Morden-Times-like construction. It is a sort of symphonic sculpture which in the composer’s own words words propels forth from one particular inspiration: the New York profile as seen from Liberty Island one icy cold January day with it’s open clear sky and dazzling sun light. 'Manhatten Abstraction' appears as an amalgam of some of the compositorical habits foundin present pieces. For instance are present here compositorical ideas and melodic loans from 'Capriccio Pian’e Forte' 2nd String Quartet(1979) 'Four Compositions' (1980) and 2nd Piano Sonata(1982). The question at hand is mainly concerned with the enhanced elaboration of Ruders’ use of the classic English change-ringing system: a permuting method pre-determining the order of tone-appearances and /or tone groups; a serial technique in other words. In spite of the rigidly fixed material Ruders somehow manages to chisel out a personal expression by way of emphasising contrasting elements already existing within the material itself. The spiky repetitive sections form a counterpart to a more human violin-solo. This dialectical tension is - as hinted by the title - a symphonic abstraction of a fascinating metropolis; the most beautiful and the ugliest. The subtitle: a symphonic skyline reflects the musical erection of the Manhattan profile which under the clear sky materializes into the most powerful and compelling man-made sculpture on earth. Thus 'Manhattan Abstraction' is a homage to as well as a vision of this giant contraption of concrete glass and chrome.

Exit Music for Orchestra was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2006-07. Exit Music was commissioned by the Bergen International Festival for the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and is dedicated to Per Nørgård on the occasion of his 75th birthday.Programme note It began with a dream as it always does when I compose. I dreamt that I was standing in an open doorway on a hill in an otherwise open landscape. I do not know what was behind the door but in front of it - towards the landscape - I 'saw' my music disappearing. I stood looking for the music and started to hear it to remember it in time with its disappearance. The dream continued to recur as strange pictures in my daydreams and I continued to try to write down the music that had vanished. It was also the dream that gave the piece its title- Exit Music. Exit Music is based on three simple songs (the songs that vanish through the doorway): a little lullaby which continues to reappear in fragments; a strange polyphonic pop song that refers to a section of my opera Under the Sky; and a passionate little love song which concludes the piece on the strings very quietly and in unison. These simple songs are then constantly overpainted by enervating repeated motes in fairly simple rhythms which push the songs out of the room. (Bent Sørensen)

Eine Tondichtung In Symphonieform In Zwei Teilen und Fünf Sätzen. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. “Titan”, the early five-movement version of the “Symphony No. 1”, has never been published before. Universal Edition is proud to make this score available for the first time in connection with the Complete New Critical Edition. Mahler composed the work at the beginning of 1888 in Leipzig. In 1889 it was subsequently premiered as a “symphonic poem” in Budapest. Our first edition of “Titan” contains the history of its genesis, reviews of the performances in Hamburg and Weimar, a discussion of the programmes and the underlying ideas behind the work, colour prints of important sources, and an extensive critical commentary that describes the variants, problematic passages and all editorial interpolations. At this point, we would like to refer to a statement by the International Gustav Mahler Society (IGMG), which is very concerned about Mahler editions that are not up to date with musicological research and thus cannot do justice to the composer's intentions. In 1832 the Royal Philharmonic Society of London honoured the young German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with several commissions. One of the works composed as a result was the A major symphony the ?Italian? based on Mendelssohn?s experiences in Italy in 1830 and 1831. The work was premiered in 1833 conducted by the composer.Today the Italian Symphony has a firm place in the canon of classical masterworks though at its premiere and both the following performances the work was not entirely positively received.Mendelssohn himself was unhappy with it. In 1834 he revised the last three movements but didnot complete this revision. To this day the early version of the ?Italian? is the one played everywhere whilst the revised version has remained to a large extent unknown. Bärenreiter?s critical new edition edited by Christopher Hogwood includes all the performance material for the complete version of 1833 together with the last three movements in the composer?s revised version. Conductors can now choose between the early and revised versions; the revised one includes the first movement from the early version.- A famous work for the Mendelssohn anniversary year in a new Urtext edition.- With the well-known early version and the composer?s revised version.- Includes an informative foreword in English and German.- With facsimile pages.- Full score & performance material (BA9094) available for sale.

(+)
Trois po?mes d?Henri Michaux was written for the Zagreb Biennale and first performed there by the orchestra and choir of Radio Zagreb conducted by the composer and Slavko Zlatic on 9 May 1963. It is composed for 20-part choirand an orchestra similar to that of the Symphony of Psalms though without the lower strings of the latter.Lutoslaswski has said that the general outline of the work came to him first and only then did he choose the threepoems. These reflect his Francophile taste: Henri Michaux was born in Belgium in 1899 and later became a painter: the trenchant Le Grand Combat with its onomatopoeic invented words dates form the 1920s; the other two texts which are more philosophic than pictorial form the 1930s. Choir and orchestra need separate conductors even though throughout they alternate more often than they combine.A description of the course of the music itself will bemore useful than any discussion of its technical processes or of its notation. A quiet section of orchestral polyphony which brass sforzandi punctuate with increasing frequency frames the beginning and end of Pens?es. Afterthe choir?s first unaccompanied passage the woodwind have a staccato section over which the female voices singing downward glissandi are superimposed (?Ombre de mondes infimes??). Then the woodwind and both pianos join in alapping ostinato which illustrates the text of the next forte choir entry ?Pens?es la nage merveilleuse?? The climax of the movement comes as these characteristic woodwind figures alternate with the tintinnabulation of agamelan-like ensemble of vibraphone c?leste harp and pianos.
