It was written without any known incentive or commission during the time that Mozart was composing “Don Giovanni”, a time when he was celebrating his greatest success as an opera composer. The work is one of the jewels of Mozart’s output, combining bright radiance and a natural simplicity with brilliant refinement. Similarly, the autograph manuscript of this perfect masterpiece is captivating because of its balanced clarity and beautiful handwriting. In 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte. The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The first performance of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio “Messiah” on 13 April 1742 in Dublin aroused unqualified rapture. A newspaper report a few days later declared that it combined “the Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender”. Its success has remained undiminished ever since, and the “Messiah” has taken its place in musical life. In 2009, to mark the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, the British Library and Bärenreiter joined forces and made the autograph score of the “Messiah” available to the public in a meticulously reproduced, lavishly published facsimile. The renowned Handel scholar Donald Burrows introduces the characteristics of Handel’smanuscript, describes the history of the work’s composition, and explains the differences between later versions of the “Messiah”, as reflected in the conducting scores. This authoritative edition presents full-score reproductions of three of Liszt’s best-known symphonic poems. Les Preludes (Symphonic Poem No.3) grew out of the composer’s unpublished choral setting of Joseph Autran’s poem “The Four Elements”, blending stirring martial music and lovely pastoral themes to make this work the most popular of the symphonic poems. Mazeppa (Symphonic Poem No.6) evokes Victor Hugo’s portrayal of the Cossack leader and the symbolic triumph that comes only after defeat: “He runs, he flies, he falls, and he stands up king!” Heroide Funebre (Symphonic Poem No.8) is the last vestige of the monumental Revolutionary Symphony, planned but never completed, suggesting universal brotherhood: a fine, heroic, dignified funeral march. In these richly sonorous works, Liszt explored the concept of the one-movement “transformation of themes,” an approach to composition that Wagner would carry forward in his development of the leitmotif.
