The serenade flourished in Mozart's era, but with Brahms the genre experienced a new surge in popularity in the 19th century. Dvorák's cheerful and relaxed op. 22 came into being in 1875, during a very happy time for him both professionally and privately. Heput his personal stamp on the five-movement composition by incorporating stylized Slavonic dances. The spirited finale captivates by restating themes from the previous movements. Since its premiere in 1876 the work, with its melodic richness and particular harmonic modulations, has enjoyed great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Today it is among Dvorák's most popular and most frequently performed compositions. As well as the autograph and printed editions, the composer's copy of the printed score with autograph corrections and additions has been consulted for Henle's Urtext edition.

The discovery of a lost source to AntonÃn Dvorák's â??Nocturneâ? in B major op. 40 provides new insights into the genesis of the composition and the composer's intended final form of this lyrical little piece for string orchestra. The musical material of what was later to be named â??Nocturneâ? was initially elaborated in the String Quartet in E minor; subsequently it was used in the original version of the String Quintet in G major as its second movement. However Dvorák then extracted it again, expanding and editing it afresh. The final result was the â??Nocturneâ? for string orchestra (two violins, viola, violoncello, double bass). The first edition was published by Bote and Bock in 1883.The authorized second copy of the work that had served as a template for the first printing was discovered by the editor Jonáš Hájek in a privately owned collection. This enabled him to resolve the several ambiguities caused by the existence of multiple versions and to unveil the authentic â??Nocturneâ?.

With this arrangement, my goal is to maintain the integrity of the original work, while making it accessible to the younger orchestra. An important aspect of the successful performance of this piece is maintaining an energetic tempo. The repeated eighth notes in the accompaniment should be played cleanly and crisply to maintain momentum. There are many places where abrupt changes in dynamics occur. For example, m. 1 begins with a string unison forte, which suddenly drops to piano at m. 11. Accents, staccatos, and other articulations should be carefully observed. To be effective, crescendos should begin at a reasonable volume, so they have somewhere to go dynamically. I hope you and the orchestra enjoy this arrangement. With this arrangement, my goal is to maintain the integrity of the original work, while making it accessible to the younger orchestra. This delightful Serenade in D (K. 100/62a) was completed in 1769, when Mozart was a mere 13 years of age (and this is an ideal fact to share with students)! The first movement, even though composed at such a young age, provides challenges for every musician in the ensemble and is musically appealing to players and audience. This would be an outstanding addition at any point in a program but works particularly well as a concert closer!
