This 5-movement, multi-media choral drama honors one of the great heroes of the emancipation era. The journey of those who sacrificed becomes a story we can relive and honor. Dr. Kean's goal was to compose and arrange original music and traditional spirituals in a style that is evocative of the enslaved Africans' frame of mind. The spirituals are accompanied with kalimba (thumb piano) to honor the sub-Saharan African musical tradition of connecting with ancestors and with the marimba to sound like the west African balafon. This is a work that will move an audience to tears. Medium to difficult. The Journey of Harriet Tubman has generated a much needed discussion of African American enslavement and and cultural appropriation. The composer has dedicated half of his royalties from this work to â??The Equal Justice Initiative,â? a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. In 1990, Ewazen wrote his Three Lyrics of Edna St. Vincent Millay for soprano Jody Dall'Armi with piano accompaniment. About ten years later, Ewazen created a version for trumpet and piano, and also for trumpet and marimba. Answering a commission by Cantabile Chamber Chorale in celebration of their 20th anniversary season, Ewazen set the first poem, God's World, for mixed chorus and piano. The text celebrates the wonder and beauty of our world, but with an understanding of the fleeting temporal passing inherent in each view. Ewazen's lush melodic lines are crafted to match.

Gonzalo Grau's oratorio Aqua, commissioned by the International Bachakademie Stuttgart, is concerned with the important global theme of water. It is precisely in central Europe that this precious commodity is frequently and thoughtlessly wasted, while in other parts of the world it is so scarce. Moreover, water shows two sides, which Grau makes audible in his oratorio: It gives, but it can also take life - in some places rain brings luck, while in others it brings destruction. Worldwide water is a theme, it means different things in different cultures - this, for example, is reflected in the music of Indian and African cultures. Gonzalo Grau's compositional style is marked by a variety of influences: For me a Gregorian chant is just as beautiful as a Cuban Santeria song. Indian ornamentation and baroque articulation can both appear in the same piece, says the composer.
