All of the musical suggestions come from a careful study of the poem a quiet passionate soul occasionally speaking a little bolder than the age will allow. She loves almost to the point of distraction and this mood mustprevail in the performance: shy and sullen her passion surging to the surface only to sink back into the silence that is herself.Go Lovely RoseThe piece is structured around the cyclical lifeof a rose and is connection throughout by the opening 'rose motif' a seed that begins on the tonic and grows in all directions before it blossoms dies and grows again. Each season is represented: spring begins the piece summerappears at bar 13 autumn at bar 26 winter at bar 39 with spring returning at bar 49. The form is based on the Fibonacci sequence (the pattern found in plant and animal cell divisions) - its fifty five bars are a perfectFibonacci number. The Golden Mean appears at bar 34 as all parts are reunited to complete the flower before its final blossom and inevitable cycle of death and rebirth.Each performance should be approachedwith a child-like innocence and naivety that allows us to marvel at the return of the rose each spring. The szforzandos throughout must be light and gentle.With A Lily In Your HandWater and Fire. If the performance of this piece connects these contrasting elemental ideas its success is guaranteed. Scored for Chorus SATB and Organ Parry’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis alternates unison lines with Chorally complex phrases in both movements. It includes examples of Parry’s characteristic forward-looking harmonies.Composer and Organist Hubert Parry creator of the great hymn Jerusalem among many other works was not intended by his family for a career in music. When he finished at Eton in 1966 he spent the summer studying composition in Germany before matriculating at Exeter College Oxford where he read law and modern history. During his time there he did very little composition but did create this Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in D.

Løft mig kun bort / Come lift me up (for mixed chorus SSA*) *) the second movement may be performed by a children’s chorus or by the female voices (SSA) from a mixed chorus Programme note From my very first aquaintance with these Andersen poems I was deeply moved by the simple almost naive yet evocative imagery with which Andersenrealized his visions images like: “The Melody of the Heart” “The Poem of Beauty” “A Spiritual Hindustan” “Fly Death over the Sea of Time fly to Eternal Summer”. Along with this “childishness” Hans Christian Andersen’s poetry encompasses enormous – almost Willim Blake-ish – cosmic visions in the interpolations between e.g. “reaching the Heaven” as opposed to “you’ll find it in a Rosebud” or the juxtaposition of “Everyday Life” and “Eternal Poetry” - which become one. Thus the music came to life in my immediate encounter with these words which almost sang themselves into my Musical Furnace – if you will. Per Nørgård

This work for unaccompanied double choir (SATBSATB) was commissioned by the Summer Music Society of Dorset. It was first performed in May 1989 at Sherborne Abbey Dorset by the Tallis Scholars conducted by PeterPhillips.Tavener:The remarkable text by Clement of Alexandria inspired this piece for double choir. From the stand point of today when I take a perennialist and therefore universalist stance concerning all the main greatreligious traditions this text is very close to my heart as is also the music. The opening theme sung by the two choirs forms the basis of the whole work. Bold simple massive and ecstatic in character I hope that this workrestores something of a Gnostic dimension to Christianity the loss of which could be said to be one of the greatest tragedies of Christianity in the West.
