The magnificent interweaving of harmonies and dialogue-like Voices in Handel&rsq...(+)
The magnificent interweaving of harmonies and dialogue-like Voices in Handel’s For Unto Us A Child Is Born make it a perfect addition to the festive choral repertoire. German-born British Baroque composer George Frideric Handel originally composed this piece in 1741 for the English-language oratorio Messiah which eventually became one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. As the last song of Scene 3 of Part I of the oratorio which addresses Isaiah's specific prophecy about the virgin birth of a Messiah For Unto Us A Child Is Born tells the news of Christmas thebirth of a son in Isaiah’s words as found in the Scripture (Isaiah 9:6). The delicate familiar theme is introduced by the Sopranos and taken up by their counter-voices the Tenors later the same dialog is given over to the Altos and Basses. The tutti culminates in 'Wonderful' 'Counselor' 'The Mighty God' 'The Everlasting Father' and 'The Prince of Peace'. As an individual piece this song arranged for SATB Voices with Piano accompaniment is perfect for Christian settings especially during the Christmas season.

The 'Hallelujah' Chorus, arguably the most famous choral work of the western classical tradition, is the closing number of the second part of Handel's Messiah. Such is the strength of Handel's word setting that this empathic, triumphal paean retains its appeal in spite of the cultural overexposure and controversy to which it has been subjected, remaining a firm favourite with choirs. The premiere of Messiah was in Dublin in 1742 as the high point of a full season of Handel's work. It was a charity event, held in aid of local causes, and in order to get the maximum attendance at Neale's new music hall in Fishamble Street, men were asked to remove their swords, and ladies the hoops in their dresses. The tradition of standing during performances of the 'Hallelujah' Chorus, still indulged at some performances in Britains, is said to have been started by King George II at the work's opening run in London in 1743. / SATB Et Orgue

For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11 1727 Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was according to all reports one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem No. 2 ('The King Shall Rejoice') although less well-known than Anthem No. 1 is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro brilliant and elegantrather than pompous; a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him'; and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion. For six-part chorus of mixed voices with organ or piano accompaniment. Edited and with keyboard reduction by William Herrman.

Handel wrote his magnificent Zadock the Priest for the Coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline in 1727 and it has been performed at every British coronation since then. It is often used in royal weddings as well and is the television theme for the UEFA Cup champsionships. This Zadock the Priest is scored for SSAATB Chorus and Piano. Its familiar opening no longer carries the surprise element it once did with the mezzoforte String passage leading to a sudden tutti forte entrance with the words ‘Zadok the Priest’ but it retains its effectiveness. The middle passage is a dancelike ¾ rhythm before the work returns to stately 4/4 for the God Save the King alleluiasand amens.
