Impressionistic music seems to capture the spinning of the potter's wheel as it turns and helps to bring theatre to the words and the message into clarity. An accessible piano accompaniment makes this useable by adults andyouth choirs. Music with a strong teaching potential!

For SATB unaccompanied chorus edited by Patrick Russill.'This seventeen-bar miniature was according to the owner of the autograph ‘written by Dr Howells in some spare minutes before the end of a theory lesson at the Royal College of Music in June 1966’. We shall never know whether the composer himself would have wanted to see it in print but now that it is many choirs will surely rejoice and welcome it into their repertoires. Though it looks on paper barely more taxing to sing than a hymn-tune the harmonies require singers who can pitch dissonant notes with confidence and who have fairly wide ranges. The irregular metre gives the music an expressiveflexibility but this too presents challenges. It is in the final phrase that the hand of a master is revealed with an exquisite darkening of the harmony at ‘God be at mine end . . .’ and a final cadence that is quintessential Howells.' - RSCM Reviews

The text of Susanni is a translation of Martin Luther's hymn of 1535, Vom Himmel hoch . The music is based loosely upon the well-known chorale melody, which, at times, is quoted in full in both voices and organ. Except where indicated, singers should adopt a legato style, especially in the repeated quaver patterns. In the bars which appear to be in compound time, conductors should beat in crotchets. An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers, the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs, including sacred and secular works from simple, four-part settings to more expansive, yet accessible, repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. Bill Ives has spent his life in choral music - as a singer, conductor, teacher and composer (writing as Grayston Ives). He was a chorister at Ely Cathedral and later studied music at Cambridge, taking composition lessons with Richard Rodney Bennett. After Cambridge he sang in Guildford Cathedral Choir before joining the King's Singers, with whom he recorded and performed worldwide. For eighteen years he directed the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford. During his tenure the choir earned a Grammy nomination for a disc of music by Orlando Gibbons, and gave the première of Paul McCartney's Ecce Cor Meum, written especially for them. Par BENJAMIN GEORGE. Inspired by the fast-moving scenes and vulnerable, complex characters of Elizabethan drama, this new opera by George Benjamin and Martin Crimp considers what space, if any, exists for love and human affection inside the dangerous machinery of power. A king, compelled to choose between love and political hard-headedness, makes a fatal decision, allowing his country to slide into civil war, and setting his own wife and son implacably against him. Lessons in Love and Violence is Benjamin and Crimp?s third operatic collaboration, following Into the Little Hill and the critically acclaimed Written on Skin. COMPOSER'S NOTE
At the suggestion of Michael Hampel, Precentor of St Paul's Cathedral, I have set words by Robert Bridges, who was Poet Laureate from 1913-1930. Bridges was an outstanding humanitarian and writer, whose poetry has inspired me before in The Voice of Desire, a song-cycle for mezzo-soprano and piano. This short, fast-tempo setting aims to emulate the swift, fleet-footed rhyme and metre of the two-verse poem, with its unobtrusive but telling reference to 'man in his hasty days'.
J.W.
Commissioned by the Chapter of St Paul's Cathedral to mark the 90th birthday of HM The Queen, generously supported by the Boltini Trust. Performed at the National Service of Thanksgiving for HM The Queen's birthday at St Paul's Cathedral, London, on Friday 10th June 2016 in the presence of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
Music by Judith Weir, Master of the Queen's Music, words by Robert Bridges, Poet Laureate in the year HM The Queen was born.
Duration c. 3½ minutes
I LOVE ALL BEAUTEOUS THINGS
words by Robert Bridges OM (1844-1930)
Poet Laureate 1913-30
I love all beauteous things,
I seek and adore them -
God hath no better praise,
And man in his hasty days
Is honoured for them.
I too will something make
And joy in the making -
Altho' to-morrow it seem
Like the empty words of a dream
Remembered on waking.

A new engraving of Thomas Attwood's delightful miniature, Come Holy Ghost , this piece is suitable for Whitsundtide or for general use. Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) is perhaps best known as the composer of such charming miniatures as Come, Holy Ghost , which is in essence a simple, threeverse hymn. Its elegant melody, first sung by soprano, then by a chorus (or quartet and chorus) is reminiscent of Mozart's delicate masterpiece, Ave verum corpus . This is perhaps unsurprising -Attwood took composition lessons from Mozart in Vienna, and one of his contemporaries quotes Mozart as saying: 'He partakes more of my style than any scholar I ever had - and I predict, that he will prove a sound musician.' Attwood worked closely with the royal family throughout his life. He taught music to the Prince of Wales, was appointed composer and eventually organist to the Chapel Royal, and organist at St Paul's Cathedral (he is buried under the organ there). He wrote the anthem I was glad for the coronation of King George IV. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Orgue
