In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane? and both versions remain a 'must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D'Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition - one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. Le génie imaginatif la finesse d?esprit et la prose simple qui caractérisent les explorations fantaisistes de ces mondes imaginaires ont fasciné des générations de lecteurs. Bert Appermont a réalisé une œuvre en quatre tableaux hauts en couleurs à l?image des récits de Swift.1. Lilliput : Après un naufrage Gulliver se retrouve sur l?île de Lilliput dont les habitants les Lilliputiens ne mesurent qu?environ six pouces de haut.Peuple vif et énergique les Lilliputiens sont symbolisés par un thème enjoué. Les couleurs pétillent? / 2. Brobdingnag : Au pays de Brobdingnag Gulliver est enlevé par des géants. La ligne mélodique revient à plusieurs reprises. L?accélération du tempo intensifie la trame dramatique de ce second mouvement. / 3. Laputa : Laputa est une île volante habitée par d?étranges personnages qui penchent la tête tantôt à droite tantôt à gauche : ils ont un œil tourné en dedans et l'autre vers le ciel. La musique évolue dans un décor chimérique. / 4. Au pays des Houyhnhnms : Au cours de son dernier voyage Gulliver arrive chez les Houyhnhnms des chevaux intelligents et profondément sages qui règnent sur les Yahoos créatures dégénérées de type humain. L?ouverture puissante (trompettes) illustre les chevaux au galop ; le thème solennel qui suit (cors et trombones) symbolise les primitifs et sauvages Yahoos. Le mouvement s?achève sur un finale grandiose.

Skillfully combining four distinctive melodies from the early-American ?shape-note? hymnal The Sacred Harp Timothy Broege has created a wonderful single-movement setting for band that includes many moods andstyles. ?Pilgrim? and ?Traveler? form the principal themes of the piece and undergo a series of variations. ?Aylesbury? and ?Jefferson? are used as transitional melodies and arecombined with the other two as the music becomes increasingly complex and contrapuntal. Voyage au Centre de la Terre-This composition was based on the world-famous novel by the French author Jules Verne. This novel describes the attempt to reach the centre of the earth. The descent of the crater of the volcano called Snaeffels situated in Iceland marks thebeginning of this voyage to the sublunary world. The German geologist professor Lidenbrock is accompanied on this trip by his nephew Axel and an Icelandic guide named Hans. The last mentioned will be helpful in many occasions. Dark colors & mist The composer tried in this single work to give a musical expression to various significant moments from this novel. In the introduction he sketches an image of the dismal ambience on the island by using dark colors. Risingfragments of mist reveal the flanks of the monumental mountain Scataris. The composer tries to catch this image in a majestic and broad chorale. Away from Iceland Subsequently the ostinato rhythmicity and virtuosity representthe hectic descent of the crater of the volcano. The party descends ever more and more and travels south away from Iceland. On the way they see all kinds of rock formations fossils and minerals. At a depth of thirty hours walking distance atabout 150 kilometers below the surface they reach a sub terrestrial sea which is called the Lidenbrock sea. Genuine eruption of sounds Strange electric manifestations and unpredictable weather conditions accompany thissingular phenomenon. An orchestral tutti-episode expresses this impression musically. On a make-shift raft the party continues its voyage heading to the south coast of this huge sea. Once ashore an enormous rock obstructs the passage. The blowingup of this obstacle unleashes a genuine eruption of sounds in the orchestration. Spat out by the volcano But the explosion has an unforeseen side effect. The sea - travelers and raft included - is sucked upwards into a dark hole.Again our heroes are accompanied on their involuntary voyage while left to fend for themselves by an ever increasing ostinato rhythmicity. Before an irruption can destroy the raft the threesome manages to escape and climb up through acave towards the daylight. They seem to be spat out by the Stromboli volcano on the island of Sicily far from home. The composition ends with triumphant sounds that represent the scientific triumph of these adventurers.

The Christmas Carol of Joseph-Halvdan Sivertsen (born 1950) is one of the most popular singer/ songwriters in Norway. He is well know as a first-class storyteller and he has a strong melodic line in all his music. This Christmas song was first recorded in 1991 and it has become a Norwegian classic. The lyrics tell the story of a couple travelling through time to find a city with bright lights where they hear people sing about the couple who are about to have their first baby. But still this couple can not find anybody willing to help them and they are forced to go back 2000 years to find the stable where they find some shelter. Maybe they should have travelled further ahead in time in the firstplace to find people willing to open their door to the poor and needing?

When the Second World War began the British March King Kenneth J. Alford (pseudonym for Major F. J. Ricketts R.M.) was increasingly in bad health and had composed relatively little music recently. As Hitler's armies marched victoriously across Europe Britain was soon alone facing the Nazi peril. Alford's great contribution to the war effort was the composition of two of his great masterpieces ARMY OF THE NILE celebrating the first Allied victories over the Germans in North Africa and EAGLE SQUADRON. The latter of these marches celebrates American airmen who travelled to England during the early years of the war (before the entry of the United States into the conflict) tovolunteer for service with the Royal Air Force serving with great distinction during the Battle of Britain. Alford skillfully weaves a number of well-known tunes into the fabric of the music including the Royal Air Force March and The Star-Spangled Banner while also including a reference to the Siegfried motive from Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Mark Rogers' edition of this classic march includes a handsome full score and concert size set of parts.

The Unknown Journey fut commandé par le Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band un orchestre d?harmonie établi en 1954 qui est désormais l?un des meilleurs orchestres universitaires du Japon. Le compositeur choisit ce titre puisque pendantle développement du morceau il semblait créer son propre élan commençant lentement et accélérant continuellement. Vers la fin il devient progressivement semblable aux dernières mesures de La Valse de Ravel un morceau qui caractériseparfaitement l?idée d?élan irrépressible.

Composer Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) was a native of Spain but was influenced early in his career by the impressionistic harmonies of Debussy and Ravel while studying in Paris. Upon returning to Spain he drew inspiration fromSpanish folk music with La Procession du Rocio becoming one of his best-known works. The music portrays a festival and procession that takes place in the Triana neighborhood of Seville and is filled with wonderfulidiomatic Spanish musical elements.
