German composer and Horn player Franz Strauss (1822-1905) is the Father of the great Richard Strauss on whom he was a huge influence. Remembered for a significant contribution to the Horn repertoire Franz Strauss' Les Adieux remains prominent in concert and recital programmes. Born in Bavaria Strauss was principal Horn player for the Bavarian Court Opera for more than 40 years as well as a teacher at the Royal School of Music in Munich. Les Adieux was among the composer's earlier compositions. The piece is a Romance meaning it is highly lyrical. Strauss' workaddresses chromaticism variety in key signatures and articulation as well as semiquaver flourishes and ornamentation. Les Adieux is a sublime work for Horn and Piano suitable for advanced players.

French composer Alain Louvier (b. 1945) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won the 1968 Prix de Rome. His L'Hydre À Cinq Têtes makes for an exciting addition to the repertoires of the Horn Trombone Alto Saxophone Clarinet and Bassoon. As suggested by the title this Louvier work is influenced by a serpent-like water monster in Greek mythology the Lernaean Hydra who possessed many heads. Louvier's composition is virtousic for all instruments exploiting extended techniques such as ornamentations articulations and breath notes amongst other elements. With a typical performancelasting around four minutes Louvier's L'Hydre À Cinq Têtes is perhaps ironic in being adaptable to five different solo instruments; Horn Trombone Alto Saxophone Clarinet or Bassoon with Piano accompaniment. L'Hydre À Cinq Têtes is a challenging yet inspiring work for advanced players.

This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was first performed on 2nd May 2000 at the Barbican Centre London by Richard Watkins. Mozart composed his Rondo In E-Flat Major for Horn and Orchestra on 21 March 1781 just five days after his move from Munich to Vienna. The Rondo was most likely intended as a final movement of what would have been Mozart's first Horn concerto.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments. He composed seven works for Horn with En Irlande premiering in 1951. Featuring on both the ABRSM and Trinity grade 6 syllabus En Irlande is dedicated to Monsieur Leferme a Professor at the Conservatoire National de Valenciennes where Bozza was Principal for much of his working life. As the title suggests En Irlande is influenced by the country Ireland and is based on an old Irish melody. During this Bozza work for Horn contrasting sections changes in time and keysignatures variations in dynamics and articulation and the use of extended techniques are heard. Being such a versatile piece En Irlande is an exciting addition to the Horn player's repertoire.

This second book of solos is a direct continuation of the first. It takes students to a point where they can begin to tackle the standard sonata and concerto repertoire. The book is designed to cover many of the technical problems encountered by the intermediate horn player and later pieces introduce important techniques such as hand-stopping and the bass clef. As with book one many pieces are originally associated with the horn and notes at the back of the book give background information and tips for interpretation. Villanelle for Horn and Piano-Paul Dukas wrote his Villanelle as a demanding exam piece for the horn class of the Paris Conservatoire in 1906. The title referencing a cheerful traditional vocal genre that originated in 16th century Italy already shows that it is by no means a dry etude.Alongside the technical challenges (stopped notes fast scales playing without valves using natural horn techniques) the piece is successful because of its refreshingmelodies for which reason the Villanelle is still one of the most popular performance pieces for the horn. For our Urtext edition we consulted the autograph as well as the first edition that was originally for horn andpiano: the later version with orchestral accompaniment does not stem from the composer.
