An imaginative look at a good old-fashioned Christmas! From aromas of family favorites cooking in the kitchen to the images of decorated trees snow scenes and caroling - all are a part of that wonderful celebration.Rather than just taking the same old Public Domain Christmas carols for one more go ?round Timothy Johnson has composed the majority of THREE HOLIDAY SCENES using fresh and original melodies. The first scene opens with fragments of ?Oh Tannenbaum? but quickly moves into a beautiful Christmas waltz. An ?effets de neige ? or ?Snowfall effect ? carries the luscious second and contrasting scene. In the 3rd and final scene the phrases from well-known carols mergewith one another creating the effect of ?caroling.? Finally melodies serve as counterpoint for one another and bring this delightful vignette to a close. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to work with the Art department in creating drawings and paintings of holiday images. Pull your chair a little closer to the fireplace and sit back for a winsome holiday treat!

Ritmico is a dynamic contest style overture that joins florid melodic writing with a pulsing percussion and driving bass lines. Cast in ABA form the main vivace theme gives way to a lyrical cantabile middle section eventually leading towards a recapitulation of the main theme. In this final section the melody and accompaniment figures return with an energetic counterpoint woven in building towards an exciting and dramatic finish to the piece. This is an ideal closer or opener perfectly suited for medium to advanced ensembles. (Grade 4)

This work was commissioned in memory of Peter J. Swanson a trumpet and cornet player who tragically died at the tender age of fourteen. Peter’s favorite gospel song Just a Closer Walk with Thee has been used as the basis for this piece of contrasts which takes the listener through many styles and moods. The spiritual character of the original song resounds gloriously in When Time Will Be No More.

The undeniably beautiful melody YE BANKS AND BRAES O’ BONNIE DOON is the foundation upon which this colorful and expressive Trumpet solo piece is crafted.A closer look at the orchestration of this classic Scottish air shows that the soloist is not the only one who gets to be expressive. Subtle contrapuntal motion and vividly contrasting colors resonate throughout. This arrangement is rich and deep.Let that soloist shine!

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself after the Greek language meaning 'Nowhereland' and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.

Though somewhat dark and dramatic in character A Million Suns at Midnight is ultimately a hopeful optimistic work evoking the struggles of humanity to grow achieve and evolve finally overcoming our fear (and its mostcommon manifestation: violence) to transcend our physical and mental boundaries. Individuals now possess an unprecedented technological capability for both creation and destruction and we must ensure that the million suns atmidnight are not those of fiery destruction but of bright hope.A Million Suns at Midnight is an appropriate and dramatic concert closer and is constructed so as to require minimal rehearsal time with the fullensemble allowing each section to work on their parts separately and assemble the whole quickly and confidently.NOTE: This work is available as a rental item directly from the composer.
