The unbroken popularity of Vanhal's sole double bass concerto in competitions and for practice and concert purposes is reason enough for us to publish the work in Breitkopf Urtext. The new edition profits from Tobias Glöckler's experience of many years. As with the other great double-bass concertos of the classical Viennese repertoire (Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister), Glöckler arrives at convincing solutions. He began by filtering out a solid musical text from the source (which was not always free of contradictions) that was supplied with many additions. The disposition of the solo part required detailed knowledge of performance practice, since the work was written in the historical Viennese double bass tuning, and a few passages cannot be played without difficulty on a modern instrument. As with Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, the piano reduction makes it possible to use three different double-bass tunings (solo, orchestral and Viennese). The surviving second and third acts of Catone in Utica, one of Metastasio's most dramatic libretti, premiered in Verona in the spring of 1737 in a setting by Vivaldi, contain some of his finest, most mature, and most original arias, and are published here for the first time. They evince a potential dramatic intensity that makes us regret all the more the loss of the first act. Only one aria of Act I can be definitely recovered from a surviving opera, but the rest has now also been successfully reconstructed by Alessandro Ciccolini, whose intimate knowledge of Vivaldi's working methods, combined with brilliant stylistic insight won universal acclaim for his work on Vivaldi's Motezuma and Ercole sul Termodoonte. The 'Concerto da Camera” (1941) is the last of his works inspired by the Baroque concerto grosso. The 'Rhapsody-Concerto”, composed eleven years later (1952), was the first work of his so-called 'fantasia period”, marked by a more open sense of form and an expansion of tonality. The edition of the 'Concerto da Camera' shows, for the first time, the extend of Martinu's modifications to the work since its composition and publication, particularly on the solo violin part. The edition of the 'Rhapsody-Concerto” takes into account, among others, the discovery of previously unknown contemporary performance materials. The four works presented in this volume – 'Frühlings-Phantasie” op. 23, 'Frühlings-Botschaft” op. 35, 'Die heilige Nacht' op. 40 and „ Beim Sonnenuntergang' op. 46 – were composed between 1852 and 1870. All of these works belong to the 'concert piece” genre, as the title pages of the respective first editions suggest. The works' instrumentation is varied: While „ Frühlings-Botschaft ' and „ Beim Sonnenuntergang' are composed for mixed choir and orchestra, 'Die heilige Nacht” calls for an additional solo alto. 'Frühlings-Phantasie” is not scored for choir at all, juxtaposing the orchestra with four solo voices and piano. Conçu en tant que pièce humoristique de circonstance à l’occasion du concert de Carnaval de son ami le violoncelliste Charles-Joseph Lebouc en mars 1886, le Carnaval des Animaux obtint un tel succès que Saint-Saëns en demanda, peu de temps après, l’interdiction d’exécution et de publication. Il craignait, de fait, que cette «Grande Fantaisie zoologique» - consistant en 14 courtes pièces pour onze instruments - ne vînt faire de l’ombre à ses compositions sérieuses. Cinq mois seulement après la mort du compositeur, elle fut quand même imprimée et entreprit alors - dans sa version originale comme sous forme d’innombrables arrangements - son cortège victorieux dans le monde entier.
C’est ainsi que le Carnaval devint alors l’œuvre véritablement la plus populaire du compositeur français, tandis que son originalité musicale lui permet d’être abordée fréquemment dans l’enseignement musical ou jouée par des orchestres d’élèves.
