This book includes selections from that film arranged for French Horn with a fully orchestrated CD accompaniment. The french horn book is compatible with that for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. The scoring of Schubert's Auf dem Strom (On the River) for voice, horn and piano is reminiscent of that of the Hirt auf dem Felsen (Shepherd on the Rock, HN 969) with obligato clarinet. Both pieces were written in 1828 and each one upon a musician's request - in this case that of the horn player Rudolf Lewy. Schubert gave the first performance of Auf dem Strom with the latter and the tenor Ludwig Tietze on 26 March 1828 in Vienna. It was such a success that it was soon performed again, and the press raved about it being an 'indescribable treat for the ears?. Urtext. Par SCHUMANN CLARA. Schumann's horn sonatas were composed in 1936/37. Considering the slim repertoire offered horn players from this period, it is more than surprising that these two masterpieces could have slumbered for so long. Both sonatas are similar in structure, with op. 118 being one Schumann's few three-movement sonatas. The first movements of the pieces sparkle with melancholically lyrical melodies, whereas passages strongly marked rhythmically, variously shape the two outer movements. Virtuoso moments can be found, respectively, in the final movements, bringing the works to a brilliant close. The horn parts predominantly range within the full, sonorous middle register, where occasional 'outbursts” up to the notated a flat'' are also not lacking. The clever handling of the balance of sounds, the possibilities on the early valve horn as well as the inner interweaving of themes differentiating horn and piano make the sonatas an exceedingly vivid testimony to Schumann's mature compositional art. The title of this piece comes from 'Celtic Cross' by Norman MacCaig, a poem that brings to life the symbols of an earlier time, carved in stone, entwined and plaited in abstract forms. The idea of a coiling serpent and the image of the coiled horn also came together in my mind. The opening phrase of the piece is responsible for much of the musical material for the whole piece, a strong and vibrant phrase that I wanted to capture something of the essence of these noble creatures on Celtic crosses. The idea of plaiting and entwining plays an important part in the unfolding of the piece. John Casken / Cor Et Piano
