The Clarinet Quintet in A, K. 581 is Mozart's only completed Clarinet Quintet. It was written in 1789 for the clarinettist of the Viennese Imperial Court Orchestra, Anton Stadler, and is often named after him. Originally written for Basset Clarinet and String quartet, it has been arranged for many different ensembles since. It is one of the composer's most admired works, with its idyllic flowing melodies and sumptuous harmony making it one of the highlights of the classical era. The Larghetto is the second movement, written in sonata form. It has been arranged for Organ by the Henry Coleman (1888-1965), who was organist at Peterborough Cathedral from 1921-1944. The piece is light in style, as its name suggests, but requires a fairly good manual technique and neat pedalling. A three-manual instrument is needed for really effective performance (a choir clarinet is necessary for the solo middle section). This is an attractive piece to include as a contrasting item in a recital, and would certainly be a useful addition to the repertoire of wedding music. Charles Louis Eugène Koechlin (1867-1950) a étudié avec Massenet et Fauré et fonda la Société Musicale Indépendante avec Ravel, Schmitt, Caplet et Huré. Poulenc et Sauguet étaient deux de ses élèves. La composition des organes de Koechlin est publié dans une édition en deux volumes pour la première fois. Qu'il s'agit d'une oeuvre très importante apparaît clairement dans le fait que les créations ont été réalisées par des organistes importants: Olivier Messiaen a joué la Chorale op. 90 et Maurice Duruflé la première Sonatine.Une édition intéressante pour des concerts, des compétitions et de la liturgie.
