Raymond Gallois Montbrun (1918-1994) published his Dream of Janceline for Alto Saxophone and Piano in 1947, just three years after he won the Grand Prix de Rome. Along with his Violin Concerto, Japan Symphony and Concertstück for Clarinet and Piano, Dreams of Janceline for Violin and Piano remains popular to this day. Dreams of Janceline for Violin is made up of twelve easy pieces in variety of styles, the seventh of these being The Nightingale's Polka. This movement addresses harmonics, a modulation and articulation, among other aspects. Hans Winterberg's extraordinary life was written in two chapters, one Czech and one German, split right down the middle by the experience of the Shoah, which Winterberg, unlike his colleagues Ullmann, Krása, Haas and Klein, miraculously survived. In 1947, the Prague-born composer moved to Munich, where he worked for the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, he belongs both to the Czech tradition following Janácek and to the circle of the Second Viennese School. He saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern culture. The circumstances under which Winterberg was able to compose during the war years are still unclear. Although his “mixed marriage” initially saved him from deportation, he had to perform forced labour and was eventually sent to the Terezin ghetto in January 1945. The Suite for Violin and Piano was composed in 1942, the year in which both Winterberg's mother and his piano professor Thérèse Wallerstein were murdered by the Nazis. Compared to the violin sonata from 1936, the Suite is much more condensed, lasting less than seven minutes. A melody dominated by chromatic turns and expressionist harmony lend the work its melancholy character, which gives way, however, to an almost irrepressible defiance in the rhythmically percussive last movement.

Hans Winterberg has only recently been rediscovered as one of the most important representatives of the Czech avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. Performed but not published during his lifetime, his works were locked away after his death due to tragic circumstances and are now being published for the first time in a collaboration between the Exilarte Centre of the Vienna University of Music and Boosey and Hawkes. In contrast to his colleagues and friends Ullmann, Haas, Krása and Klein, Winterberg survived the Shoah through a series of miracles. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, he is both a successor to Janácek and a member of the wider circle of the Second Viennese School. The Sonata for Violin and Piano, written and premièred in Prague in 1936, is one of the most important chamber music works of the pre-war period. It exhibits all the characteristics of Winterberg's personal style: a sensuality of sound grounded in French Impressionism with a simultaneous expressionist rigour of harmony, a small-scale motivic structure, a sophisticated play with polyrhythmic patterns and, especially in the last movement, a musical impetus borrowed from Czech folklore.

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism.

Robert Kajanus (1856-1933) was a highly influential Finnish conductor and composer. He studied in Helsinki and Germany, established the Helsinki Orchestra Society (later Helsinki Philharmonic) and its orchestra school, and was the orchestra's chief conductor for over 50 years. Kajanus is often regarded only as a conductor, but he was indeed a skilled composer whose music is largely unknown. This Urtext volume, edited by Sebastian Silen, contains all of Kajanus's works for violin -- his own instrument. Claude Debussy composed two chamber music works for the clarinet. He wrote his Première Rhapsodie and his Petite Pièce as mandatory pieces for the wind competitions at the Paris Conservatoire. With their lyrical tone colours and focus on cantabile melodies, Debussy's sound ideal is evident in both pieces as if under a burning glass. Both are now also available for violin and piano, arranged by pianist and composer Dejan Lazic.
