Filled with wit and charm, they contain many of the memorable elements of the opera: Papageno's magic bells, gentle love duets, tenderhearted trios, and lively arias. Debussy composed the Petite Suite in 1888 when he was 26. The period up to 1890 was a time in which Debussy's later distinctive impressionistic style has not yet emerged. The Petite Suite shows the influence of the French lyric opera composers Gounod and Massenet as do most of Debussy's pre-1890 compositions. The work could be considered neo-classical because it contains pseudo-dance movements and because of the style of Keyboard writing used through which Debussy pays a kind of homage to the French clavecinists. Version for Piano four-Hands-Grieg?s incidental music for Henrik Ibsen?s drama ?Peer Gynt? contains some of his best-known compositions such as ?Morning Mood? and ?In the hall of the Mountain King?.Grieg later extracted the most beautiful pieces to form two Orchestral suites and arranged himself these versions for Piano solo and Piano four-hands. There was a surprise in store for Henle when they werepreparing this Urtext edition. In the autograph and the first print run the second suite contained another movement the ?Dance of the Mountain King?s Daughter? which Grieg deleted shortly afterwards. Thischarming dance appears in the appendix to this edition printed again for the first time in 120 years! The Norwegian pianist and Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg was co-editor for this edition and alsoprovided the new fingerings.
