The composer states:'Nightfall is an incantatory piece inspired by how light changes at the end of a day: the adding and subtracting of colours and shadow- the slowly building and diminishing dynamics- the shifting texture as the sun intensifies and then disappears over the horizon.Nightfall should be sung without vibrato so that the vocal colours and their translucent quality remain pure and clear. Recalling Baroque passacaglia procedure, the bass line underpins the entire work.Nightfall requires a chorus of no less than 26 voices with at least two basses. It's important to keep the parts balanced as the texture thickens so that all the lines are always clearly heard.? / Choeur Mixte A Cappella

Music for the perfect wedding day... religious service civil ceremony & reception-Whether it be a traditional white wedding in church or a contemporary civil ceremony in non-religious surroundings everyone wants their wedding day to be perfect. The pieces in the Confetti and Cake volume will help wedding couples and choirs alike choose the most appropriate and effective music for any occasion. There is music that caters for all tastes and abilities offering plenty of balance and variety. Pieces range from very simple to the somewhat more complex. Standard sacred repertoire (Bach Gounod Mozart Walford Davies etc.) is followed by some contemporary church anthems one (by Will Todd) written specially for this book; favourites such as theperennial Flower Duet appear alongside other enticing non-religious music; finally we have some secular romantic love songs (Jerome Kern Swingle numbers and even some G&S!) which cannot fail to capture the mood of the day. Sing these either at the ceremony itself or perhaps later at the reception. There are notes at the end of the book which provide very brief background information: eg texts (with translation where appropriate) dates and approximate timings so the ceremony can be planned meticulously.Whatever the circumstances and size of your choir there will be a something within this volume that will suit you. But more than that the versatility of the Concerts for Choirs series is such that it can be used as an invaluable resource for choral material whatever your requirements.

This a cappella collection of pieces for mixed choir by Eric Whitacre is the first available printed music compilation of its kind for the composer. The book includes pieces of varying difficulty wide-rangingin theme from the iconic Sleep and Water Night to the quietly angelic Lux Aurumque (Light and Gold) and the recent Nox Aurumque (Night and Gold). A Boy and a Girl and ThisMarriage are both wonderfully tender pieces and the inclusion of the early Go Lovely Rose marks the beginning of a journey through Whitacre's choral output from this first success to the present day.Eric Whitacre is a Los Angeles-based composer and conductor who is held in the highest esteem everywhere inspiring and motivating a new generation of singers and musicians. His music creates a visceral impassioned response in audiences and performers. In 2008 the all-Whitacre choral CD 'Cloudburst' released by the British ensemble Polyphony on Hyperion Records became and unexpected international best-seller topping theclassical charts and earning a Grammy nomination. The BBC raves that 'what hits you straight between the eyes is the honesty optimism and sheer belief that passes any pretension. This is music that can actually make yousmile'.

The Mamas and The Papas' hymn to the West Coast state California Dreamin ' was actually written in chilly New York City by John and Michelle Phillips before they even formed the band that made them famous. Simon and Garfunkel were New York through and through and Simon's jaunty song about the Queensboro Bridge - aka Feelin' Groovy - uses its local colloquial name. Skeeter Davis, born Mary Frances Penick, was the survivor of a car crash that killed her singing partner Betty Jack Davis. They had enjoyed some success as The Davis Sisters but The End Of The World was the biggest hit of Skeeter's subsequent solo career. In My Room saw The Beach Boys moving indoors from all that sun and sand and recording one of their most reflective and lovely songs. Meanwhile the British invasion was threatening the pop status quo in America and Can't Buy Me Love , from the film Hard Day's Night, gave The Beatles yet another number one in the US charts. Novello Choral Pops: Sixties Hits contains these five decade-defining hits, newly arranged for SATB Choir with Piano accompaniment. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Piano

Cantata for string orchestra and chorus. Triptych represents the concatenation and re-orchestration of two extant works. Movement I was commissioned with funds from The RVW Trust for the inaugural concert of the Choir of London conducted by Jeremy Summerly in Christ Church, Spitalfields on 18th December, 2004 - the work, premièred as Threnody, was subsequently toured by the Choir to Jerusalem and the West Bank from 19th-26th December, 2004. Movements II and III, commissioned by Portsmouth Grammar School with financial support from the PRS Foundation, were premièred as And There Was a Great Calm in a contiguous version for lower strings and upper voices by the Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir and the London Mozart Players in a concert at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral on 13th November, 2005 conducted by Nicolae Moldoveanu. The title of this latter section is taken from Thomas Hardy's poem of the same name, written at the signing of the Armistice on 11th November, 1918 - a couplet from which is set, in a moment of tranquillity, in the final movement. Relatively new to living in New York, I am much more aware of the independent, vibrant cultural plurality that exists today - it's probably the single most dazzling facet of the City and is largely responsible for the infamous 'edginess' that pervades daily life there. With this in mind, I set to work on Threnody (movement I here) in 2004 - I wanted to write something that was relevant to the Israeli/Palestinian issue without losing that City 'edge'. The texts, in English, are excerpted from a variety of sources: William Penn, William Blake, the Psalms of David and Muhammad Rajab Al-Bayoumi, an Egyptian poet of the early twentieth-century. Fast and rhythmically influenced by the music of North Africa in its syncopations, this movement was the first composition that evolved entirely from my New York perspective. From the moment that the commission for And There Was a Great Calm (movements II and amp - III here) was offered, I knew the piece I was about to embark upon would end up being linked with Threnody in some way. I realized that what I had been aiming for in Threnody served as a template for this new piece, originally composed for a Remembrance Sunday concert. Musical works connected with commemoration or memorials are often suitably pensive and slow - I wanted to start with that concept, but to bring in some of the relentless urban rhythms that had been such a large influence on my life in the preceding two years. The result is that that the second movement is quiet and gentle (a moment of recollection), while the final movement is much faster and vibrant, returning to a more openly elated rendering of the start of Triptych (the texts here dealing with transmigration and the future). and nbsp - I gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Bruce Ruben and Judith Clurman, as well as that of my parents, with the collation of the texts. James Whitbourn's Beatus Vir for SSATB choir with a Piano accompaniment for rehersal. Commissioned for the Choir of St Matthew’s Church Northampton. First performed on StMatthew’s Day 21 September 2017 conducted by Justin Miller. 'With the wedding season soon to be upon church musicians James Whitbourn’s new five-minute wedding anthem Set me as a seal upon thineheart deserves a warm welcome. It would be easy to learn quickly if rehearsal time is limited with vocal lines that are not demanding and helpfully supported by the organ. But the music itself has a haunting intense beauty thatis very special. Judge for yourself with the performance on YouTube that appears to have been made at the wedding for which it was written. St Matthew Northampton for which Walter Hussey commissioned so notably continues an enterprising music commissioning policy most recently with Whitbourn’s setting of Beatus Vir. The commission was for the feast day of St Matthew last September and the published score describes the text asbeing the Gradual for St Matthew. But that rather limits what is simply the first two verses of Psalm 112 and deserves to be sung throughout much of the church year. Forget Monteverdi and other lively settings of Beatus vir:here we have a contemplation on how blest is the person who trusts in the Lord. Despite a dramatic outburst on ‘potens in terra’ (‘mighty in the land’) the work ends as it began with an extended gentlesetting of the word ‘Beatus’.' - Sunday by Sunday

Anne Boyd: Jesus Reassures His Mother: SATB: Vocal Score

(+)
Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymously in the 14th century. The poet recounts a vision of the young Mary rocking the infant Christ to sleep. The child requests hismother to sing a lullaby but alas knowing her child’s fate she is too sad to sing. Jesus tells her that all mothers worry about their children’s futures and insists that she should sing nevertheless. Mary recounts the visit ofGabriel and the events of Christ’s birth but reflects how sad it is to have delivered a child to such a fate. Jesus reassures his mother that he will be with his father in heaven where Mary will come to join Him at the end oftime there to live in eternal bliss. At this point Mary is persuaded by and echoes her child’s reassuring words and she is joined in this by the choir (now representing us all). The vision fades away in the voice of the narratorwhose loneliness and longing return. We learn that it is Christmas Day. This setting grows from the visionary mystical world inhabited by Julian of Norwich whose Revelations of Divine Love provided the inspiration for awork Anne Boyd composed in 1994. The medium has been expanded from the Song Company’s six solo voices used in the Revelations to the double motet choir of the Sydney Philharmonia who commissioned this work for their 75thanniversary. The parts of the infant Jesus Mary the Narrator and the angel Gabriel are taken by choir soloists: soprano alto tenor and bass. The work is situated in the context of Boyd’s personal musical aestheticwhich she describes as the intersection of Christian Love with Buddhist silence.

A Tender Light is a collection of new choral music by the Welsh composer Paul Mealor including the Ubi caritas made famous by its inclusion in the Royal Wedding Ceremony of His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton (now TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) at Westminster Abbey in April 2011. 2.5 billion people (the largest audience in broadcasting history) heard his Motet on that day and since then it has topped the Classical singles charts in the USA UK Australia France and New Zealand and has already entered the standard repertoire for many choirs. Anna R. Matthews writes: 'Frederick Niven's poem tells the story of Christmas in 1914. On Christmas Day a truce was spontaneously enacted by the two sides fighting in Flanders in World War One. This was five months into the war which until this point many in Britain had confidently believed would be over by that time. When the two sides lay down their weapons in the name of humanity and met in the middle of no-man's-land they would not have realised the bloodshed that was to come as the war dragged on for a further four years - a conflict so atrocious that it came to be known as 'the war to end all wars'.This carol conveys the unknowing innocence of thosemen and the joy of Christmas yet explores the sinister context in which they met and the future which was to come. Ultimately the events of the 1914 Christmas truce came to symbolise the universality of hope and peace at Christmas. This carol brings this message into the twenty-first century.' Anna R. Matthews is a composer living in Exeter England. Born in Devon Anna studied music at Durham University where she was awarded the Rosalind Dickinson Prize. She enjoys working with some of today's most talented and creative ensembles: from Psappha to EXAUDI and from cathedral choirs to youth ensembles. Her music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and she has been a featured new music composer in Choir & Organ magazine. Anna was a finalist in the 2011 King James Bible Composition Awards and is a 2013/24 Arts Council England fellow on the Clore Leadership Programme. She is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

For mixed SATB chorus unaccompanied. Includes a Piano part on the score for rehearsal purposes only.'My God why hast thou forsaken me?' was originally written in the summer of 2006 on a course run by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. It was first performed by the choir of Eton College directed by Ralph Allwood. This motet intends to capture the anguish of Jesus’ final moments on the cross. The opening bars attempt to convey the horrific pain sorrow and tragedy that these words and the climactic moment of Christ's crucifixion mean to Christians worldwide. It is also a human sentiment echoed every day by the needy regardless of their religious views. Thepiece ends with a repetition of the opening phrase followed by a blossoming 'Amen'. This expressive conclusion hints at a glimmer of hope although the final chord is left unresolved; resolution though suggested is not obtained.

(+)
Following the publication of Francis Jackson's organ reduction of Finzi's Requiem da Camera in 2014, Robert Gower, chairman of the Finzi Trust, recitalist and organist of Nottingham Cathedral, has created reductions of the full orchestra accompaniments to two more of Finzi's choral works. These reductions broaden the reach of these works to choirs which do not wish to present the works with orchestra, as with other standards from the sacred repertoire such the Requiems of Fauré and Duruflé. The reductions sympathetically recreate the orchestra scoring for a three-manual organ. Ingeniously, the manual couplings (II to III, II and III to I) are unaltered throughout, with pedal coupled to manuals as appropriate. Detailed registrations are not indicated as these are best left to the performer, taking into account the unique circumstances of the particular instrument, size of choir and acoustic setting at each performance. The scores are user-friendly, in landscape format and with at least one principal vocal line cued throughout, and a cappella choral passages are reproduced in full. The reductions are fully compatible with the published piano vocal scores of the respective works which the singers will use. For St Cecilia, Ceremonial Ode for tenor solo, chorus and orchestra - words by Edmund Blunden. The original work was commissioned by the St Cecilia's Day Festival Committee for the 1947 celebration of music's patron saint. The ceremonial mood is established with fanfares, and the sonorous sweep of the choral writing reflects Finzi's admiration for Parry and Elgar. The 'catalogue' of saints, shared between the soloist and chorus, are deftly delineated: St Valentine, St George, St Dunstan, St Swithin and St Cecilia herself. In rapt stillness, the English composers of the past - Merbecke, Byrd, Dowland and Purcell - are summoned. To close, Finzi creates a festal summation with exultant counterpoint and the saint's name pealing around the chorus. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Orchestre

Novello New Choral Series-In Out of the south cometh the whirlwind chant-like melodies and colourful organ writing combine to explore the relationship between God and the natural world. Awarded a 2011 King James Bible Composition Award the work uses rich language from the Book of Job to chart a trajectory from doubt toward belief. At the opening lyrical melodies build from a single pitch to proclaim the majesty of the ?wondrous works of God.? But doubt painted with nervous lines in the altos and basses soon invades only to be diffused by a beautiful voice from beyond a treble solo. Their faith restored the choir joyfully celebrates God?s power and mystery and the anthem ends inquiet contemplation. The Novello New Choral Series is an inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers offering pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yet accessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. (+)
As a singing teacher choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning over a musicaltapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work says the composer is 'the human reflection on the uncertain on death on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility excitement fear and atonement. The chant ends without ending there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'

(+)
This work is intended for performance on Good Friday during the 'Adoration of the Cross' ceremony of the Roman (Catholic) rite. The pitch of the sung parts is given by a member of the choir who after discreetly obtaining a tone with the aid of a tuning fork (or other such device) intones 'Popule meus' (and later 'Hagios') clearly on the notes indicated in each case. The recited 'Hagios' choruses should be performed as speech on diverse tones but in the natural speaking registers and in compliance with the rhythms and expression marks indicated. When reciting the word 'Sanctus' the consonant 'nc' should dominate. The two speech choruses develop into a 'Miserere nobis' sungon chance (random) tones with fixed time values (durations) the second time however culminating in completely free improvisation. At this point each singer sings 'Miserere nobis' independently of the others. The sentence may be repeated (ad lib.) with new variations until at a sign from the leader each initiated phrase is terminated in a diminuendo. These improvised sections should allow for considerable freedom of expression. They should be a result of spontaneous inspiration but should at all times be characterised by sacral dignity and should conform to the character of the work as a whole. All sections to be performed quasi attacca - keep the intensity. The reproaches are to be recited by a male chorister in his normal speaking register but quasi cantabile. It is left at the discretion of the performers to decide how many of the recited verses in the last section of the work are to be performed. When 'Popule' is sung for the last time the word 'mihi' should be uttered as a sigh.Bernhard Lewkovitch

(+)
A jolly Christmas carol-This lively carol was commissioned in 2005 by Lichfield Cathedral Special Choir (now called the Cathedral Chorus) to celebrate the birth of Hannah Scriven and Holly Mason the daughters of the two cathedral organists at that time. The words were specially written by Tony Barnard the then Canon Chancellor at Lichfield and a member of the choir. This carol whilst not entirely foreign to my normal style touches more ‘country and western’/popular buttons than I am in the habit of touching. But I wanted to write a tuneful piece which swayed and danced and reflected the colourful imagery of Tony Barnard’s text. Recommended recording: Comeout Lazar – The shorter choral works of Paul Spicer (Regent REGCD280) by The Chapel Choir of Selwyn College Cambridge and Claire Innes-Hopkins (organ) directed by Sarah MacDonald. Text: This child of God who’s born on Christmas day whom shepherds view to whom kings homage pay is called to be a shepherd and a king. Sing alleluias praise this wondrous thing. This child of God is shepherd born to lead through pastures green by banks of golden reed; nor left nor right but ever on the way which leads to Calvary and endless day. This child of God this Son of David’s line is root of tree a shoot a fruitful vine it shelter gives to all who see the way which leads them to the cross and Easter day. This child of God this many spangled star is light’ning flash which dazzles near and far; bright light to guide our feet along the way that leads to Calvary and endless day. This child of God is called to save mankind to open eye and ear the heart and mind; to heal and make the lame man leap and play along the road that leads to Easter Day. This child of God let angel voices praise. Give God the glory live his loving ways. Let peace on earth o’er come our worldly strife through all who walk his road throughout their life. Tony Barnard
