Contemporary American composer Nico Muhly is a prolific writer and arranger who at 32 is the youngest composer ever to have been commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His oeuvre includes two operas and many solo pieces and works for small ensemble Orchestra and Chorus and he has collaborated with artists such as PhilipGlass Björk and Sigur Rós.In the December 2014 edition of Organists' Review Christopher Maxim writes that 'the vocal writing frequently evokes Renaissance polyphony' and 'the language is fresh and contemporary with much zest being added by the organ part.'

L’année 2008 marque le 400e anniversaire de la fondation de la ville de Québec (1608-2008) au Canada. Pour célébrer cet événement, la Musique des Voltigeurs de Québec, une unité d’infanterie de la force terrestre des Forces canadiennes, a fait appel au compositeur Philip Sparke pour l’écriture de deux oeuvres de concert (disponibles sur un compact disc édité spécialement pour cette occasion). Philip Sparke a composé Sounds of the Saint Lawrence (Échos du Saint-Laurent), une suite de chants traditionnels québécois, et cette fantaisie libre sur le canon Freu’ dich des Lebens de Ludwig van Beethoven. L’histoire de ce canon est absolument fascinante. En 1822, Théodore Frédéric Molt, un professeur, auteur, pianiste et organiste allemand - ancien soldat dans l'armée napoléonienne ayant combattu à Waterloo - arrive à Québec. En 1825, il retourne en Europe afin de parfaire sa formation. Au cours de son séjour, il rend visite à Beethoven. Quelques jours plus tard, il fait parvenir une lettre au compositeur sourd en incluant une feuille blanche sur laquelle il lui demande d'écrire « du fond de son grand coeur » un souvenir « qui restera pour moi, à une distance qu'il me faudra presque 3000 heures pour parcourir, un document éternellement précieux. »Beethoven accepte et, le 16 décembre 1825 (jour de ses cinquante-cinq ans), il présente à Théodore Molt le canon Freu’ dich des Lebens Le manuscrit est actuellement conservé dans une collection canadienne. Beethoven’s Greeting (“La signature de Beethoven”) débute avec une introduction lente basée sur le canon. S’ensuit un Vivo qui sera repris ultérieurement sous la forme d’un déchant à la mélodie du canon. This cantata for soprano and baritone soli chorus and organ was commissioned by the Dean and Canons as part of the musical celebrations in honour of the Quincentenary of St George's Chapel Windsor. Five poems selected for the composer by Canon Stephen Verney explore the different and often opposing facets of Faith and it's demands upon the individual culminating in an optimistic vision of the union of divine and human love. The cantata is dedicated by Gracious Permission to Her Majesty the Queen.

Kantate zum Reformationsfest [Rekonstruktion: Reinhold Kubik]-J.S. Bach's Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott for SATB and Orchestra.Bach's Reformation cantata based on what is probably Martin Luther's most famous hymn evolved over a period of several years. At the beginning was a Weimar cantata for Oculi Sunday 1716 now missing which was based on the hymn with an instrumental quotation in the opening aria and with the final chorale. In the Leipzig years around 1730 Bach wrote a cantata for Reformation Day using this material. It began with the first verses of Luther's hymn in a simple four-part setting and also included the other verses. Later on in the 1730s or 1740s Bach replaced the introductory chorale movement with achorale setting which was unique spacious and motet-like in its style; this uniquely in this respect incorporated the choral writing in an instrumental canon for oboes and organ continuo. The powerful opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias which reflect the full breadth of Bach's art of word painting and emotion. One of Bach's most magnificent cantatas one of the greatest works in the history of music. In addition to the complete performance material the arrangements of movements 1 and 5 (with 3 trumpets timpani as playing score) by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach are available.

A jolly Christmas carol-This lively carol was commissioned in 2005 by Lichfield Cathedral Special Choir (now called the Cathedral Chorus) to celebrate the birth of Hannah Scriven and Holly Mason the daughters of the two cathedral organists at that time. The words were specially written by Tony Barnard the then Canon Chancellor at Lichfield and a member of the choir. This carol whilst not entirely foreign to my normal style touches more ‘country and western’/popular buttons than I am in the habit of touching. But I wanted to write a tuneful piece which swayed and danced and reflected the colourful imagery of Tony Barnard’s text. A work for unaccompanied SATTBB choir constructed in the form of a Byzantine Canon. The work was commissioned by James Lancelot and the Choir of Durham Cathedral who gave the first performance on the occasion of the 1300thanniversary of the death of St. Cuthbert: 20th March 1987.'Commissioned by James Lancelot and the Choir of Durham Cathedral who gave its first performance on the 20th of March 1987 the 1300th anniversary of St Cuthbert's death. Structurally modelled on a Byzantine Canon Ikon of St Cuthbert 'an ikon of music and words in the place of wood and paint seeks to recall in its stylized form the personal aura of Cuthbert Saint of Lindisfarne'. The textis again by Mother Thekla a contemplation on Cuthbert's life from his early piety and life as a monk acts of spiritual healing consecration as a bishop and retreat into solitude to his death on Farne and ultimate burial inDurham. Imagery of water runs throughout the verses.

This rousing triple meter choral is infused with traditional gospel harmonies, rhythms, and articulations, and the uplifting text conveys an urgent message for peace. Valet je vous donnerai - Vous méchant, faux monde ... Après poème spirituel de Valerius Herberger et basé sur la mélodie du choral par Melchior Teschner le compositeur français Naji Hakim (né en 1955) a écrit un ouvrage émouvant pour choeur et orgue. Le 5 Choralvariationen résultat de la joie céleste dans la voix d'un ensemble gracieux pour orgue seul, puis Hakim conduit à un ensemble pour choeur a cappella et un canon pour soprano et alto avec accompagnement d'orgue.
