Song of Israel is based on a world-famous tune the traditional song from Israel entitles Hatikva. Roland Kernen makes creative use of this melody presenting it a variety of styles including a section with a ‘rock’ feel to produce a cheerful concert work.

The haunting melody of this traditional tune likely dates to the Middle Ages and was published by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams in the 1906 English Hymnal. Freely adapted by Johnnie Vinson in this setting for young bands the minor melodyis stated first by low clarinets and horns. The next section introduces an original theme which is then combined with the first melody in the moving final section. Beautifully paced and scored largely in choral fashion this is a wonderfully freshand unique offering for holiday or winter concerts.

Auld Lang Syne-This traditional melody is known worldwide as a song of farewell. Jan Van der Roost treated it as an anthem in this splendid arrangement. The melody is brought to us in whole or in part by various instruments and is surrounded by logical yet original - sometimes surprising - chords that dare to fluctuate. After a broad tutti the ensemble begins to die out. The piece ends with an impressive diminuendo of the final chord almost as if the orchestra itself were saying goodbye.

Longtemps considérée comme anonyme cette mélodie aurait été composée au milieu des années 1820 par Sir Henry Rowley Bishop. Bien que cette théorie fut difficilement concevable pour certains (comment un Anglais aurait-il pu composer un célèbre air traditionnel écossais ?) elle reste néanmoins la plus communément admise. Il existe plusieurs textes accompagnant cet air. Le titre Dance Away dérive de la phrase « Dance away the hours together » extraite des paroles de Sir Hugh Roberston. Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding. I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous it seems delicious liqueur and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is 'Cock O' the North ' a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon). In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text. Auntie Mary had a canary Up the leg of her trousers While she was sleeping Iwas peeping Up the leg of her trousers. II. ' The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond ' is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion who had still a long way to go. You'll take the high road And I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond III. In a Scottish wedding after the official ceremonies there is often danced. This is called a ceilidh. For this we use traditional Scottish music such as 'Marie's Wedding '. Mid dance we go back to the church where a lovely song in honor of the couple sounds. Marie's Wedding has been recorded by Van Morrison (among many others). Par GYORFFY ISTVAN. Hungarian-style dance music which flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries - generally referred to as ungaresca - represents a valuable part of European musical tradition. István Gyorffy's work (2007-2010) is a late successor of this tradition. It was written with the intention of embodying the eastern-central European tradition in order to present an alternative to the current fashions of music for wind instruments. The composer's approach to this style utilizes traditional forms of music. Both the first and third movements effectively optimize a concert band's tonal possibilities by using solos and small chamber groups in a varied manner. The slow and melodic second movement transfers a characteristic playing technique of Hungarian instrumental folk music to the concert band. István Gyorffy composed Ungaresca for young people preparing for careers in music. The work provides an excellent opportunity for students not only to display their instrumental skills, but also to gain orchestral playing experience./ Répertoire / Concert Band

for Concert Band-Frederick J. Ricketts composed his famous marches under the pseudonym Alford. The march On the Quarter Deck was written in 1917 during the 1st World War and was written to commemorate the Battle of Jutland. The quarter deck is the raised deck behind the main mast of a sailing ship; traditionally it was where the captain commanded his vessel and where the ship's colors were kept.

Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed at the last minute to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month.This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band.Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies willmake a fitting end to any concert with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
