'A Man's Destiny'-‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (‘with much conviction’) was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (Friesland The Netherlands) to mark their 95th anniversary. As requested by the commissioning party the composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band who played flugelhorn until the age of 86. Music was very important in the eventful life of the man in question. A passionate musician he had a great love for chorale melodies and his favourite piece the famous Canon by the English composer Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) was the source of inspiration for this composition.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of 'There is a land of pure delight' and is known as the 'Father of English Hymnody'. Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World When I survey the wondrous cross I sing the Mighty Power of God) 'There is a Land of Pure Delight' is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction derived from the opening notes the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse.

Easter Fantasy-Fantasia di Pasqua est une fantaisie basée sur des mélodies chorales pascales issues de la Renaissance. Un quatuor (cuivres/bois) joue un rôle primordial dans le développement de la pièce. La musique pascale étant essentiellement destinée à être interprétée dans un lieu de culte le compositeur préconise de placer le quatuor sur le balcon. L?effet de double chœur ainsi créé donne à la pièce un caractère varié et divertissant.
