The Austrian late-Romantic composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) is nowadays recognised as one of the greatest composers of his time. A successful conductor during his lifetime it was only after Mahler's death that his own compositions began to enjoy widespread popularity. Composed between 1887-1888 Mahler's celebrated First Symphony received high critical acclaim as a groundbreaking work which took the imagination and narrative of a symphonic poem and gave this the cohesion of earlier structures from the genre. Mark Goddard's innovative Mahler One Inspiration By The Ton! takes the First Symphony and condensesand abbreviates the movements into four delightful miniatures for flexible String Ensemble. Suitable for String groups at an intermediate level this enjoyable arrangement is highly playable and enormous fun. Mahler One Inspiration By The Ton! is also available for Flexible Wind Ensemble and Flexible Brass Ensemble . These three instrumental packs can all be used together.

'Le Voyage Dans La Lune is a continuous orchestral score of approximately 14 minutes comprising two outer fast sections and a slower inner section of a dream-like character. The work is directly inspired by the film Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) written and directed by the pioneering French film-maker Georges Méliès. Méliès was influenced by 19th century interests in science and discoveries as well as the science fiction of Jules Verne. At the same time his work seems fantastic surreal and satirical. Some critics point out an underlying critique of colonial adventuring. The plot centres on a group of astronomers who decide tolaunch a rocket to the moon containing a handful of their number. They reach the moon (famously landing on the moon?s face) and then encounter a strange race of aliens whom they battle and destroy. The return to earth involves a dramatic descent a plunge into the ocean and then celebratory dancing. The film inhabits a surreal and dream-like space and uses an idiosyncratic visual language which transforms reality. This inspired an active musical response in my own score which is by turns abrupt smooth lyrical and violent and expresses something of the strange shifting surfaces and multiple and layered tempos evident in the film. The canons in the horns in the first scene reflect the intense arguments of the astronomers as they consider the project. The slower inner section is inspired by the scenes of the industrial City viewed from its rooftops by the astronomers. It also expresses the wonder of the astronomers as they see the earth rise from the perspective of the moon after their arrival there. The music of the final section is in places conflicted reflecting the violent encounters with the moon?s inhabitants. It moves into a more harmonious phase at the close to match the celebrations upon the astronomers? return from their adventuring. The music could be considered to be a surreal mini-opera

The music for this piece was inspired by a short extract from a traditional melody sung by women cloth-workers in Barra in the Western Isles of Scotland. The Scottish folk music tradition is one that Weir has frequently drawn onin the past both in shorter works such as the songs of Scotch Minstrelsy and in her second opera The Vanishing Bridegroom and it is one she has completely assimilated into her technique. The modal feel of this piece however is as much a result of Weir's intuitive and idiomatic harmonic sense as of the original inspiration. Overture for Orchestra commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Tanglewood MusicCentre in 1991; it received its first performance there on 3 August that year.

Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English a classical scholar essayist poet and politician but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon.The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems nature paintings I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic. I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety but have chosen the following 3 excerpts all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical

ACT has been described as both a musical onslaught and also a playful tour de force an impressive and skilful work for full Orchestra. When Wallin’s Clarinet Concerto was performed by the ClevelandOrchestra in 2002 the composer was so buoyed by the warm reaction of audience and musicians that he was inspired to create this work for Orchestra to summon all its forces as one entity in forward motion together. Composer's Note: Quilting co-commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic is my first stand alone work fororchestra and is loosely inspired by the American tradition of quilt making. I composed Quilting while living most of last year in Paris. During my time there I thought a lot about what it means to compose symphonic music as ayoung American in the 21st century when so many of the many masterworks which are programmed year in and out by orchestras across the country are European. I considered which artistic traditions defined the American 19th-century.I began to think of the American crafts-tradition of quilting as a foil to the high-art tradition of European orchestral composition. As the score for my new work began to take shape I started thinking about themanuscript itself as an object its vertical and horizontal planes create a kind of patterned geometry of their own. Visually the way a musical score is woven together like patchwork brought to mind quilts and the great Americantradition of quilting. I imagined about how conducting an orchestra can feel like stitching a piece together or sewing together a large number of musical ideas and musicians into a coherent and transcendent whole. Quilting was an integral part of American vernacular in the 18th and 19th centuries the African-American quilting tradition is especially fascinating and the quilts tell the stories of the women and communities who made them.The names of the quilt patterns themselves can have their own sense of narrative: 'jacobs ladder' 'drunkards path' 'solomon's puzzle' and (my favorite for its relevance to this piece) 'the road to California.' -Bryce Dessner

Eclairs Sur L'Au-Delà - Part 2 VII to XI is the second part of this religious orchestral piece by Olivier Messiaen composed between 1987 and 1991. Orchestra Scores-Saint Francois D'Assise is an opera in 3 acts by Olivier Messiaen. This volume is part of the edition that includes the books with the full Orchestra scores as well as the explanations analysis and comments of each tableau. It is focused on the “Act 1 Tableau 2. Les laudes” which tells of the moment when Saint Francis his requests to God to meet a leper and to be able to love him. This tableau depicts Saint Francis and the “Mineurs Brothers” singing the morning service until the bells ring leaving Saint Francis alone to pray. It includes Saint Francis’ prayers some parts of Cantique descréatures on Brother Wind Sister Water Brother Fire and Mother Earth and the Sanctus. Benet Casablancas was inspired by a passage of John Milton?s ?Paradise Lost? and its further interpretation by the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa in order to name one of his key works Darkness Visible.The versatile use of the Orchestra as well as the great timbral and textural differentiation may prevail as structure to this work. Moreover the way Benet Casablancas formulates the harmonic thought and its involvement in the development of his discourse seem to be a more crucial characteristic of Darkness Visible.This work deepens into the exploration of the unfathomable mystery of the night.It is conceived as a nocturne of big proportions that goes near quiet and rarefied atmospheres but is punctually disturbed by more agitated passages suddenly illuminated by gleams of light.

Partition d'Orchestre in 16 [Poche]-This romantic piece for large orchestra was composed in 1922 and is inspired by the author’s experience in the Mediterranean Sea when he was in the navy. Slightly Impressionist this piece is one of those who made is international reputation. Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Divertissement' (1930). He also was in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

Composed in 1964 Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum is a religious piece by Olivier Messiaen which title means “And I wait for the resurrection of the dead”. Commissioned by André Malraux this orchestra lasts approximately 35 minutes and was written for the commemoration of the dead in the world wars. It features five movements: I. 'Des profondeurs de l'abîme je crie vers toi Seigneur: Seigneur écoute ma voix!' II. 'Le Christ ressuscité des morts ne meurt plus; la mort n'a plus sur lui d'empire.' III. 'L'heure vient où les morts entendront la voix du Fils deDieu...' IV. 'Ils ressusciteront glorieux avec un nom nouveau -- dans le concert joyeux des étoiles et les acclamations des fils du ciel.' V. 'Et j'entendis la voix d'une foule immense...' This is the conductor's score which includes all parts. Latin-Americana is a collection of 5 famous melodies and rhythms by various composers arranged for orchestra by Frank Naylor. Each work has been inspired by Latin America in some way with the classic tunes Jarabe Tapatio La Cucaracha La Paloma Clelito Lindo and Ay Ay Ay all included.Frank Naylor has become known for creating high-quality arrangements of classical music ideal for school and college level orchestras. This selection of exotic pieces is no exception - it is perfect for any young ensemble looking to expand their repertoire and impress their audiences.

Invisible Cities for Orchestra by Swedish composer Britta Byström (2013). Programme note: Invisible Cities is an orchestral piece inspired by the Italian writer Italo Calvino's novel 'Le città invisible' (1972). The novel consists of many short poetical descriptions of wondrous cities. This is what the explorer Marco Polo reports to Kublai Khan of what he has seen during his travels. Gradually though Kublai Khan begins to suspect that Marco Polo all the time describes one and the same city but in many different ways: Marco Polo's own hometownVenice.  This was also my musical idea: to present the same motif in many different ways. The piece has eleven movements just as the novel consists of eleven different kinds of cities. Before every new musical 'city' there is a 'walk' – a little piano line which takes the listener from one city to another. This piano line is a quotation from Witold Lutoslawski'sVenetian Games. There are also other music connected to Venice hidden in my piece: the well-known Barcarolle by Offenbach and some fragments from Carnival in Venice. These references are the 'invisible cities' of my piece the material hidden under the music's surface. Marco Polo explains to Kublai Khan: 'To distinguish the other cities' qualities I must speak of a first city that remains implicit. For me it is Venice.'  (c) Britta Byström  Britta Byström’s careful ear for musical qualities such as timbre and resonance has resulted in an idiom that could almost be labeled impressionistic.
