Grade 8+-It has often struck me as intriguing that The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (a collection of keyboard music spanning the period c.1562-1612) occupies a virtually non-existent place in the literature considered viable by pianists.Needless to say harpsichordists continue to hold the music in the highest esteem while a number of transcriptions for instruments and ensembles have been made available in more recent times. How can it be that this ancient heritage - which in keyboard music terms might be regarded as the equivalent to the Dead Sea Scrolls - has hitherto seemed a no-go area for pianists? It is as if the first 'proper' keyboard music tumbledmiraculously out of some parallel universe around Bach's time i.e. the first half of the 18th century. While our modern piano is perhaps as different from a virginal as a washing machine is from a mangle there are in fact a good many facets of virginal music which read across perfectly well to today's instruments. For this to be possible we need to take the time to lookbeyond peculiarities in translation which to a significant extent comes down to issues resulting from burgeoning notational practices. It also becomes necessary to re-imagine the music in light of what is possible as well as what is desirable. Problems with accessing the sound-world of pre-Baroque keyboard music can be overcome quite easily just as it is possible to become better in resonance withavant garde musical styles given appropriate immersion. Since the writing of the performance notes to The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book more than a century ago (by J.A. Fuller Maitland and W. Barclay Squire) the momentum generated by the Early Music Revival has brought about immeasurable insights into the intentions of Renaissance and Baroque composers. Performances on periodinstruments continue to reacquaint us with a bygone age and stimulate a healthy fascination for the practices that were once fundamental to the craft. On balance however the potential for a major

Eight pieces for Piano inspired by poems by Tristan Klingsor for Mesdemoiselles Jacqueline and Lucienne Rouché. Transcribed from the original work for Piano solo (1911). 1. Les MarionnettesA marionette is a string-operated puppet. Popular from as far back as Ancient Greece and increasingly the focus of entertainment during the Middle Ages and Renaissance period it has been proposed that the art of puppetry was the logical precursor to the appearance of live actors in the theatre. Stravinsky's ground-breaking ballet Petrushka which was completed in 1911 (the same year as Grovlez's L'Almanach incidentally) undoubtedly remains thebest-known evocation of a puppet. 2. Berceuse de la Poupée'Lullaby for a doll' though a seemingly improbable starting point for a musical work functions beautifully next to the marionettes in Grovlez's magical image-rich world though I detect something faintly subversive bubbling under the surface of this sublime melody. 3. La SarabandeThe 'Sarabande' is a stately dance in triple-time with a characteristic gentle emphasis on the second beat and was apparently first referenced in print in Central America during the 16th century (zarabanda). It rapidly grew in popularity over successive centuries especially within the Spanish colonies – and of course in Spain itself – where its reputation as having being 'invented in hell' (according to Cervantes) assured it a place in dance suites from Bach's time onwards. 4. Chanson du Chasseur'Hunter's Song' is a rollicking rum-tee-tum piece of great insouciance and swagger. The 6/8 rhythms and horn-like proclamations ride delightfully roughshod throughout the music. 5. Les Ânes'The Donkeys'. I presume Eee-orrr has the same connotation in French! – moreover the comical spirit of the music is not so far removed from Ibert's famous Le Petit Âne Blanc (Avec une tranquille

Quirky New Piano Pieces-'In choosing to call this set of 25 pieces The FitzTanner Collection I make a tongue-in-cheek allusion to the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. The FitzTanner Collection doffs its cap in the direction of this seminal ancient tome by borrowing some of the more fanciful and suggestive titles from which it is comprised but beyond this there is no musical connection with the original pieces at all. And yet stirred into the mix is my fondness for melding together bygone musical styles. Hence this album of piano pieces pitched at the more robust intermediate pianist combines quirky originality with older musical styles drawinginspiration not just from Renaissance dances and fantasies but from more elaborate Baroque and Classical styles too. That said the music is conceived very much with the qualities of the modern piano in mind and hence requires a good many pedal effects dynamics and plenty of expression. What emerges is I hope a collection of attractive piano pieces which cheerfully bear the traces of a time when the modern piano was but a twinkle in the eye. There is an enjoyable charisma to the Old English spellings of these pieces (as well as a healthy margin for idiosyncrasy I might add) and to my own creations I have taken great delight in adding a few light-hearted directions which I trust won't cause too much consternation. Not all of the Fitzwilliam titles are easily fathomed but the playful risqué and politically incorrect overtones are sometimes quite striking leading me to contemplate a similarly unserious vein in my own writing. To what (or indeed to whom) you may ask does 'Quodlings Delight' refer? I'm not sure I'd recognise a Quodling if it crawled out of my porridge (and likewise who the eponymous Barafostus might have been is anybody's guess). Perhaps on balance the music is best left to speak for itself and regardless of how many ways an old title can be reworked it will always come down to living breathing

'There is a remarkable force to all of Ornstein's music—a burst of energy a frenzy and a passion which are ever refreshing to the tired musical ear.'—George GershwinThis original anthology is the first single-volume edition of the works of American avant-garde composer Leo Ornstein (1893 2002). Characterized as a futurist and ultra-modernist Ornstein created daring dissonant works that excited both admiration and contempt. A steadfast follower of his own musical instincts the composer retired from his career as an internationally renowned pianist in the 1920s and continued to compose in obscurity for another half-century. Ornstein founded aPhiladelphia-based music school enjoyed a renaissance of popularity in the 1970s and completed his eighth and final piano sonata at the age of 97.These sixteen compositions span eight decades and demonstrate a remarkable diversity of styles from lyrical to atonal. Contents include Three Moods Impressions of the Thames Impressions of Chinatown A Long Remembered Sorrow A Morning in the Woods and other works. Aaron Copland declared a performance of Wild Men's Dance as the most controversial moment of his young life and as recently as 2002 The New York Times pronounced it 'a shocker.' Many originally published from 1914 to 1925 these pieces were long out of print until their return in this unique edition which is sure to captivate intermediate to advanced level pianists and all fans of avant-garde music.Dover Original.

This superb volume is comprised of Keyboard and ensemble works from all the major Baroque composers arranged for Piano. The Library Of Baroque Music spans compositionsof many of these masters ranging from Frescobaldi in the early 1600s to Pergolesi a century later and the famous three - J.S. Bach Handel and Domenico Scarlatti. Baroque music socalled for its ornateness was characterised by a bold exploration of counterpoint and new harmonic possibilities. This was variously expressed through the work of perhaps fifty or so major European composers. By the timeBaroque began to segue into a new Classical period around 1750 it had already irrevocably changed and expanded the possibilities of music. The works that precipitated this change are available to play in this
