The first signs of a revival in Italian music at the beginning of the twentieth century are mostly found in the important contributions of a generation of musicians all born in and around the year 1880: Ottorino Respighi Ildebrando Pizzetti Gian Francesco Malipiero and Alfredo Casella.Thanks to them the music scene in Italy began to widen its horizons which basically meant going beyond the 'exclusive cultivation of melodramatic opera and encouraging an awareness of symphonic music in the country.' With marked and unmarked string part-In 1873 following the rejection of his opera 'The King and the Charcoal Burner' Anton n Dvorák reached somewhat of a turning point in his career. Inspired to give his compositions a new direction he started to writepieces such as his String Quartet In F Minor Op. 9 in a new style that was less orientated towards Wagner. However much to his disappointment this new style was rejected by musicians. Notwithstanding this painful experienceDvorák gave the slow movement of the quartet a second chance reworking it as a Romance For Violin Or Orchestra In F Minor. It was first performed in 1877 to great acclaim. The fingerings and bowings byAntje Weithaas lend the Henle Urtext Edition of this jewel of Violin literature a special touch.

The edition of the Andante e Polacca for violin and piano published here was realised from an autograph manuscript held in the library of the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome. An inspired melodic vein, with a cantability typical of Late Romantic Italian compositions, characterises the piece, especially in the first part. The Polacca distinguishes itself for its virtuosity: rapid scales, brilliant bowings and open string passages keep the bowed-string player engaged during the second and longest part of the piece. 1001 Nights in the Harem. Par SAY FAZIL. 'My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds. As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments. As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion.' The second half of the 19th century represented something of a ?Golden Age? of the violin sonata in France: influential violin sonatas such as those by Franck, Fauré and Saint-Saëns were among the successful works of this genre, inspiring many further compositions. Saint-Saëns? Violin Sonata No.2 was written in 1896 during a stay of several months by the composer in Egypt: he began the main themes of all four movements as well as the canonic trio in Luxor and Aswan. The sonata was then completed on the Nile journey back to Cairo. That same year the sonata was premiered by Saint-Saëns and Pablo Sarasate in a concert celebrating the composer?s fiftieth stage anniversary. Astoundingly, he had first appeared on stage when he was only ten years old.
