The masters of the violin have left us an inheritance of numerous books of remarkable studies and caprices. But the very abundance of this precious inheritance makes that an important part of it remains without profit, because it is impossible for the pupils to acquire or study these few thousands studies scattered in fifty big volumes. Very frequently, however, these studies are not classified in a progressive manner. Result of an inspiration which the pedagogical spirit could not always dominate or guide as it liked to, the first studies address themselves sometimes to the pupils who conjugate yet their first shifts with the most easy bow strokes, while the last are always of transcendent difficulty. Whatever be the chosen studies, once the first step is sourmounted, the pupils must do great efforts to realize imperfectly and in divided movements, difficulties which are beyond them. The result of this is: a considerable loss of time and sometimes even much discouragement. It follows at all events, that instead of practising fifty or sixty caprice studies in one year's time, the pupils can hardly study thirty. It is the desire to remedy these multiple inconveniences, that has incited us to realize the present work and in order to accomplish it to search in the greatest works of the masters, the elements the most apt to insure rapidly to the young violinists, the most complete mecanism of the left hand and bow. These exceedingly numerous and diverse elements chosen in the old editions, have been re-examined, fingered and sometimes the nuances (shades) set by us, with the most care and then classified by degrees from the second to the eight year of study in a progressive manner. These books of studies will not bear their fruits however, unless the work is regulated from the second to the fifth year of teaching, by a good method and appropriated exercises. The studies cannot in reality during this period, replace neither a method nor the exercises, they have to be considered rather as an amplified rehearsal of elements learned elsewhere but still badly assimilated./ Méthode / Violon

Cette oeuvre fut écrite pour la violoniste suisse Noëmi Schindler à partir du long solo présent dans Messe un jour ordinaire (1994).Elle en donna la création au Kongresshaus de Zurich en mai 1995 et dans sa version définitive au Festival Présence de Radio-France en février 1996.Fauve signifie tout autant une couleur située entre le jaune et le roux, un animal sauvage, qu'un mouvement de peinture ou l'idée du ' non apprivoisé '.Si tout au long du parcours, les pièces ne font pas référence avec l'une ou l'autre de ces définitions, il y a dans cette musique de toute évidence, une résonance implicite avec chacune d'entre elles.Des six pièces, la troisième et la quatrième reprennent thématiquement les éléments des deux premières. Il est ainsi possible d'enchaîner ces pièces de manière à constituer un cycle plus court : 1 - 2 - 5 6 ou 3 - 4 - 5 - 6. / Violon

Critical Edition Violin Solo Part-This new edition of the violin solo part to the Korngold Violin Concerto in D Major is the first-ever to include Jascha Heifetz's performance notations edited by Endre Granat one of his star proteges. Born in Austria Korngold was forced into US exile by the annexation of Austria by the Nazis. He vowed to give up composing anything other than film music until Hitler was defeated. With the end of World War II he retired from films to concentrate on music for the concert hall. The violin concerto was the first such work that Korngold wrote following some initial persuasion from violinist and fellow émigré Bronislaw Huberman. Korngold was hurt by the assumption that he hadsold his integrity to Hollywood. He was thus determined to prove himself with a work that combined vitality and superb craftsmanship. Korngold composed his Violin Concerto in D major Op.35 in 1945 dedicating it to Alma Mahler the widow of his childhood mentor Gustav Mahler. The work was premiered on February 15 1947 by Jascha Heifetz and the St. Louis Symphony under conductor Vladimir Golschmann. It received the most enthusiastic ovation in St. Louis concert history at the time. On March 30 1947 Heifetz played the concerto in Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Efrem Kurtz: the broadcast performance was recorded on transcription discs. Heifetz's performance launched the work into the standard repertoire and it quickly became Korngold's most popular piece. Concerning Heifetz's performance of the work the composer wrote In spite of the demand for virtuosity in the finale the work with its many melodic and lyric episodes was contemplated more for a Caruso than for a Paganini. It is needless to say how delighted I am to have my concerto performed by Caruso and Paganini in one person: Jascha Heifetz.

'Terrance Hayes? series of sonnets is an extraordinary collection of poems: his poetry captures the spiralling social and political chaos in America (and the world) in a way no newspaper article or scholarly essay has been able to; his words have the rare quality of clarifying a collective feeling that is messy and confusing, an elusive and disturbing combination of fear, hope, perhaps despair. I have never personally experienced (and probably never will) the reality Hayes writes about: the oppression, danger and ambiguity he reflects upon are alien to my own experience. But I nevertheless felt compelled to create something inspired by his words. To engage - how can you not engage? The first movement of ''A Box of Darkness with a Bird in its Heart'' is a hurtful ostinato with an uneven, organic pulse - not unlike the way we breathe under physical or emotional strain. The second is a quiet, delicate birdsong; its very high melody almost a secret that?s unwillingly shared - followed by an expressive lament. The ending in the low register brings me the image of a viola da gamba played outside in a warm summer night, a distant tale of violence and loss. In the final movement the energy picks up, in a relentless and unforgiving mechanism of pizzicati. This piece was written for the wonderful violinist Diana Tishchenko, and is dedicated to her.
