Par SPARKE PHILIP. South Down Pictures was commissioned by Millenium Brass 2000, an organisation comprising three brass bands from the county of Sussex, England. The bands (Patcham Silver, Hangleton and Brighton Silver) had got together to organise many events to mark the new millennium and these culminated in a concert in Hove Town Hall on July 9th 2000 when all three bands combined to give the first performance of South Down Pictures. The composer spent much of his childhood amongst the South Downs, a range of hills in Sussex which runs parallel to the sea. Opening with a strong unison passage, interrupted briefly by faster figures based on the interval of a fifth, South Down Picturesdevelops with an often-passionate legato melody. Reaching a climax, this is then followed by the main vivo section of the work, whose main theme is based on the earlier ‘fifth’ figures. A bridge passage leads to a short chorale figure and a rhythmic climax which dissolves into a plaintive cornet solo over staccato chords. This theme is taken up by the whole band and leads back to a recapitulation of the main theme and earlier material. The cornet tune returns triumphantly in the major key before the opening unison passage reappears to provide a stirring coda. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Brass Band

L’année 1896 voit la renaissance de l’olympisme. Le baron Pierre de Coubertin organise les premiers Jeux modernes à Athènes. En 1996, Atlanta célèbre avec faste le centenaire des Jeux. Par GOODALL HOWARD. Shackelton's Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910-1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012. Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall's sensitive arrangement follows the composer's alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ). / Répertoire / Ensemble de Cuivres

Dieses ruhige Stück mit seinen breiten Tönen wurde im Auftrag von Robert Leveugle, dem Vorsitzenden der Brass Band, dem der Komponist angehört: die Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgien). Unmittelbarer Anlass war die Besichtigung der wunderschönen Kathedrale der englischen Stadt Canterbury, in welcher über Jahrhunderte hinweg so viele gute Kompositionen erklungen sind. Neben Solo-Abschnitten für verschiedene Instrumente gibt es einige massive Tutti-Passagen, die das Blasorchester wie ein riesiges Organ klingen lassen. Übrigens: Eine optionale Orgelstimme verleiht diesem Stück noch mehr Klangfülle, -farbe und Kraft, sodass es noch breiter und großartiger klingt. / Niveau : 4 / Musique pour célébration / Répertoire / Brass Band
