The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—the socalled Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close.

Jacob de Haan neemt ons mee naar de majestueuze bergen rondom het schilderachtige Italiaanse bergdorp Cortina d’Ampezzo, ook bekend als de koningin van de Dolomieten. Dann erklingt ein lyrisches Thema, in dem der Frieden der umliegenden Berglandschaft zu spüren ist. Auch die Betriebsamkeit des beliebten Wintersportortes ist zu hören, bevor die beiden Eingangsthemen in umgekehrter Reihenfolge den musikalischen Rundblick beenden.

Cortina d’Ampezzo è anche chiamata “la regina delle Dolomiti” per la bellezza mozzafiato del suo paesaggio. Cortina è la meta obbligatoria invernale di VIP italiani ma anche di molti turisti desiderosi di affrontare le splendide piste d’inverno e gli innumerevoli sentieri per indimenticabili passeggiate d’estate. The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Le compositeur belge Jan Van der Roost a composé cette œuvre la demande de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Municipal de Wilten-Innsbruck en Autriche pour les cérémonies commémoratives du bicentenaire de l’insurrection tyrolienne de 1809. Plusieurs éléments musicaux reflètent cet événement historique travers un climat joliment évolutif. L’orchestre énonce un thème hymnique basé sur des fragments mélodiques de l’hymne officiel du Land du Tyrol (ou Hymne d’Andreas Hofer composé par Leopold Knebelsberger) qui se mélangent et se confondent dans un arrangement en forme de contrepoint. Le dessin belliqueux du second mouvement rappelle la lutte des Tyroliens contre les troupesbavaroises, françaises et italiennes, l’instigation du combattant de la liberté Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Enfin, on retrouve une mélodie de style choral qui évoque avec ferveur l’imposante beauté des paysages du Tyrol, et transmet la chaleur et le caractère jovial des habitants de cette région montagneuse. Tirol Terra Fortis n’est ni une reconstruction historique en musique (autrement dit, une œuvre programme), ni une œuvre politique. Son contenu repose sur une combinaison d’éléments factuels et culturels qui s’expriment travers une trame artistique très expressive. Le bugle a su conserver la fidélité des Orchestres d’Harmonie autrichiens. Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie.

The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

Volontairement écrite d’un seul tenant, elle s’articule néanmoins en trois axes. Sa construction est basée sur une série de notes qui deviendront l’essence même de la pièce, son matériau. Tel le travail des compositeurs de musique sérielle, « la série » apparaitra sous différentes formes, mélodiqueet harmonique, thématique ou simplement d’accompagnement. Sa richesse rythmique et son pouvoir contrapuntique fait de cette pièce un véritable concerto pour orchestre. C’est l’Orchestre de la Police Nationale qui a le premier été séduit par l’œuvre et qui en a fait la brillante création sous la direction du compositeur Thierry Deleruyelle.

The lyrics to Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes can be traced to English poet Ben Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare. The melody's origin, on the other hand, is not certain. In this three- movement arrangement, Philip Sparke provides the soloist with plenty of substance while respecting the beautiful simplicity of the original tune.

Vooral bij jonge musici is dit oude Engelse lied van onbekende herkomst buitengewoon populair. Met zijn arrangement voor trompet en blaasorkest dat uit drie coupletten bestaat werkte Philip Sparke de solomelodie iets uit. De eenvoudigeschoonheid van het origineel verloor hij daarbij echter niet uit het oog.

Dieses alte englische Lied nicht ganz geklarter Herkunft erfreut sich besonders bei jungen Musikern grosser Beliebtheit. In seinem dreistrophigen Arrangement für Trompete und Blasorchester arbeitete Philip Sparke die Melodie für den Solisten etwas aus, immer jedoch mit Rücksicht auf die schlichte Schonheit des Originals.

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.
