One of the best known nicknames for a city that is perhaps New York: 'The Big Apple'. Already in the thirties of the last century this name is often used in New York jazz scene. With 'The Big Apple' Manhattan was intended. It was the place to be. Around 1920 Harlem was the center of a thriving black culture. This period is known as the 'Harlem Renaissance'. In the famous Cotton Club were many concerts of greats like Duke Ellington. Broadway attracts millions of tourists. Many of them visit here one of the many musicals sometimes for years on the boards are placed. Broadway splashes sparkles and swings. Peter Martin shows usthree bites tests of this imaginary apple. David Well composed ?X-mas for Three? for three young pupils of his who wished to give a Christmas concert. He arranged six well-known Christmas songs for them and their first performance was a great success. This was reason for the composer to adapt the piece for ?orchestra? by adding percussion. The title has stayed the same and the work can still be played by as few as three musicians but as the saying goes: ?The more the merrier?! ?X-mas for Three? consists of the following parts : 1. These three movements for piano and band depict three stages of a musical journey. We set off on a long journey through the world of musical virtuosity in the style of Liszt : grand lustrous and lyrical. The second stage is a peaceful stroll the start of a dream. The colours are like a tender caress and the piano sketches transparent arabesques. This splendid impressionistic journey ends in two bright pink drops which evapore just in time before the third and last movement explodes.The last movement is driven forward by a raging rhythm as relentless as a war-dance. In a confrontation between the soloist and the orchestra all the inner strength of the composer comes to thesurface so that the musicians in the end are breathless... but all the same no less satisfied.

Drei kurzweilige Impressionen-Dans le cadre du projet ?La musique de Kurt Weill? organisé à Leeuwarden (Pays-Bas) en 2006 Peter Kleine Schaars a donné une seconde jeunesse à plusieurs œuvres que le compositeur allemand avait créées pour le Dreigroschen Orchester (L?Orchestre de quat?sous) un ensemble qu?il avait spécialement formé et dont il avait fixé l?instrumentation pour interprété sa Kleine Dreigroschenmusik (Une petite musique de quat?sous).Peter Kleine Schaars s?est inspiré des trois périodes qui ont marqué la vie de Kurt Weill (1900-1950) : ses étapes à Berlin Paris et New York. Three Aspects of Kurt Weill (?Trois impressions divertissantes de Kurt Weill?) développe un thèmerécurrent exposé dans trois climats musicaux différents qui correspondent aux trois étapes de la vie de Weill.Le premier mouvement est une marche protestataire ?aux accents berlinois? qui parodie l?utilisation de la musique sous le fascisme. Les trompettes ont le premier rôle. Le second mouvement chemine sur une valse musette toute parisienne qui fait la part belle au saxophone alto et à l?accordéon. Le troisième et dernier mouvement développe le thème dans une trame swing typique du Big Band. Votre formation se métamorphose en un grand orchestre digne de Broadway !
