The Richard Wagner Complete Edition presents the composer's entire output for the first time in a reliable form. The conductor Michael Balling, in the early years of the 20th century, attempted to make Wagner's work more accessible for research and performance, but the edition only reached 10 volumes - some with grave shortcomings - and was discontinued after Balling's death in 1925. A further attempt at a complete edition by Otto Strobel was abandoned at the preliminary stages.This third attempt at a complete edition will be the first scholarly, critical edition, based on an evaluation of all the accessible source materials and the latest findings of serious Wagner research. As the edition is also intended for practical performance, the musical text has been kept free of philological insertions - these are listed in the appendices of each volume in the Critical Commentary. Numerous, partly unpublished works - some relatively unknown - and variant versions are published here for the first time. The edition presents authentic texts for Wagner specialists and researchers and critically based performing materials. Contrary to widely held opinions, even the well-known works of Wagner are not necessarily available in reliable editions. The genesis, history and performances directed by Wagner himself are extensively documented so as to present as complete an image as possible of Wagner's compositional intentions. / Opéra

Lorsque, en avril 1981, je jouai quelques-uns des 24 Caprices de N. Paganini au saxophone sopranino à Radio-France, j'imaginai réaliser une expérience trop personnelle pour mériter une large diffusion - l'exécution au saxophone de ces caprices me paraissait à l'extrême limite du possible. Grande fut ma surprise lorsque, en 1989, Didier Vadrot, alors étudiant en première année au Conservatoire de Paris, joua semaine après semaine chacun de ces redoutables Caprices dans une version parfaitement conforme à l'original. Très impressionnés, les autres étudiants de la classe de saxophone mettaient leurs pas sur ce chemin ardu au cours des mois suivants. L'immense bénéfice que chacun a retiré de ce travail, sur le plan technique - grands intervalles, détachés, perfectionnement du suraigu - et musical - longs phrasés, souplesse de l'expression associée à une grande vélocité - m'a convaincu qu'il était temps de présenter ce travail à un plus large public. Nous ne possédions pas à ce jour d'études transcendantes du niveau de celles proposées aux pianistes, violonistes, flûtistes. Après avoir travaillé les études de Mule, Loyon, Lacour, Bozza, Samyn et s'être déjà largement familiarisé avec le registre suraigu, tout saxophoniste peut se mesurer avec ce monument que Niccolo Paganini ne dédie pas aux violonistes, mais aux artistes! Par AMY GILBERT. Amy reworks his 1971 Jeux for [1 to 4] oboe(s), with assistance from French saxophonist Claude Delangle, and presents Jeux for a solo soprano saxophone in Bb. As before, the performance begins with one of three 'Tropes,' followed by one or more of nine 'Repons,' then back for another 'Trope,' etc., at the artist's discretion.
