Franz Schubert’s song Ave Maria is among his very most famous works and one of the best-loved works of he classical repertoire. In this version published by the Spanish Musical Union in 1945 the song has been adapted for solo Piano and the key transposed from B flat to C.Schubert’s Ave Maria was originally composed in 1825 as one of seven songs created from the epic poem The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott written to set the German translation of the work. The song was fairly quickly adapted for the words of the Catholic prayer Ave Maria and the Schubert melody is now frequently performed in the religious context.

French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. His Complete Study of the Fugue is an excellent introduction to the important technique. The book is in two parts, the secondgiving focus to elements such as the subject, the coda, modulations, the pedal, and structure, amongst other aspects. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes forpiano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Noël Lee (américain né à Nankin, Chine, le 25 décembre 1924) a composé Mosaïques, sa seule oeuvre pour orgue, en 1989. Commande de Pierre Lacroix, c'est Yves Castagnet qui la créa au Festival de Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges le 9 juillet 1989. Cette oeuvre dodécaphonique et néo-classique virtuose développe des rythmes, des sonorités et des thèmes extrêmement variés. En 1997, Noël Lee l'a trans- crit pour deux pianos et percussion. The orchestral suite Symphonic Dances Op. 45 from 1940 is Rachmaninoff's last work. Almost at the same time, he wrote an arrangement of the piece for two pianos which he played with Vladimir Horowitz in a private setting. The French composer Jean Guillou has now arranged the Symphonic Dances for two organs. / Orgue

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and Anton n Dvorák. This is a pity for Fibich though he died young made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich'smusical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music piano pieces and orchestral works operas stage music and melodramas literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41 written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight') written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139 entitled 'Lento' from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan Kubel k played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème' and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

Son écriture, d'une tenue technique exigeante est toujours pensée et intériorisée. Elle s'attacha notamment, suite à ses activités au sein du CEMO (Centre d'Etudes de Musique Orientale), à intégrer des éléments de musique iranienne dans certaines de ses compositions (Mathnavi op. 50 pour orgue, Miniatures persanes op. 52 pour orgue, Azân op. 61 pour flûte et orgue). / Violon Et Orgue

Still leading a shadowy existence Schumann's works for pedal piano are most likely performed on the organ today. This requires however that the music is set for the organ in accordance with the instrument's characteristic features and carefully 'arranged'. To mark the 150th anniversary of Schumann's death the well-known French organist Jean Guillou has adapted all pedal piano works for the organ adding registration indications: Six Pieces in Canonic Form Op. 56 Four Sketches for Pedal Piano Op. 58 Six Fugues on the name BACH Op. 60.
