While writing it, the Italian composer Angela Ciampani was inspired by her son Lorenzo and the sight of stars over the green hills of Umbria. Initially, it was a short solo for trumpet and piano: subsequently, Jacob de Haan extended and rewrote the composition for euphonium solo and band. This arrangement was created for the celebration of the 170th and 20th anniversaries, respectively, of the concert bands of Monteleone d'Orvieto and Citt della Pieve.Het hoofdthema van deze compositie werd gecreëerd in de nacht van 10 augustus, een van die heldere nachten met sterren die zachtjes vallen om de dromen niet te wekken. The first of two trumpet solos Smith wrote for Carl Doc Severinsen. If you have a trumpet player par excellence, then this piece is for your soloist and band. It begins with a dramatic opening followed by an Allegro. Smith then weaves in the blues for the soloist to play a wonderful lyric melody first, followed by an opportunity to adlib with the chord progression. Also available for trumpet and piano (HL44005496) Manhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their trumpet soloist Woodrow English, and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November 2003. Wanting to write a piece that demonstrated both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player, the composer decided on a two-movement work showcasing these qualities, and with the intention that the movements could be played individually when a shorter solo is required. The theme is a weekend in New York, and the opening bluesy movement (Saturday Serenade) describes the city on a Saturday night, perhaps in a smoke-filled jazz bar. While writing Sunday Scherzo, the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park. This vivaciously rhythmic movement ends with an even quicker coda which brings the work to a brilliant close.

Carl Vine's Piano Concerto No. 1 (1997) is one of three large-scale works composed with pianist Michael Kieran Harvey in mind---the others being his first two piano sonatas. Vine describes it as a conscious and continuous tribute to the piano concerto as a medium and historical entity, a fact most apparent in the slow movement, with its long melodic lines evoking both Ravel and Bach. This 25-minute concerto is cast in the familiar three-movement form, with fast outer movements framing a central slow movement. The outer movements share some material (particularly in some lively conversational interchanges between piano and trumpet), and also some typically pianistic glitter across the orchestra, with harp and glockenspiel ensuring that the piano is less of an outsider than might have otherwise been the case.

Originally written for piano, Grieg later scored his Holberg Suite for orchestra. Geoffrey Brand has done a masterful job of setting two movements of the suite - the Sarabande and Gavotte - for wind band. Give your students the opportunity to perform first-rate classical music they wouldn't otherwise have access to.Born in Bergen, Norway, into a family of Scottish descent, Edvard Grieg showed a talent for music early and at the age of 10 had piano lessons from his mother. In 1849 he went to study at Leipzig Conservatoire before moving to Copenhagen where he met Riokaard Nordaak, a young Norwegian composer who was immersed in Norwegian nationalism and greatly influence Grieg who felt his future was as a musician dedicated to romantic nationalism. Holberg Suite, originally for piano, was written in 1884 in response to a commission to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Ludvig Holberg, a Norwegian dramatist and satirist. A year later, Grieg arranged 5 movements for string orchestra. Sarabande and Gavotte are intended to be played segue but can, if desired, be performed separately. The music expresses Grieg and his native Norway in a manner which justifies his declaration I am not an exponent of Scandinavian music but of Norwegian..
