Level: Beginner The First Book of Classical Flute offers a selection of 100 melodies from classic repertoire, the result of Andrea Cappellari's many years of research and experience in music teaching. Students of any age will be able to perform melodies by classical composers from the very first lessons. All 100 short melodies consist of a minimum of three and a maximum of eight notes. Only basic rhythmic note values are used, from the eighth note to the whole note. The pieces are presented in progressive order of difficulty, and are in the most appropriate keys for the instrument. The simple piano accompaniments encourage ensemble playing at a beginner level and the recorded piano accompaniments are an excellent tool for practicing. A few selected melodies also have a second flute part as part of the recorded accompaniment. The book also includes a separate instrumental pull-out part. PAUL WETZGER (1870-1937) was a German flutist composer born in Dahme near Lübeck. At a young age he took violin lessons from the local music director later switching to flute. By 15 years of age Wetzger had played his first concert in the main church of Dahmen and was second flutist of the municipal orchestra. He later became solo flutist with the municipal orchestra of Essen and taught at the Essen conservatory. He wrote numerous pieces for flute and several chamber music works also editing works by the French composer/flutist Jules Demersseman. Wetzger's Am Waldesbach (By the Forest Brook) ideally for flute and orchestra or piano was a staple of celebrated flutistMarcel Moyse recorded by him in 1935 on the French Columbia label. Since then it has become a favorite in the flute teaching repertory perhaps most notably included Toshio Takahashi's famous Suzuki Flute Method. This Southern Music edition faithfully captures this classic piece as performed by living legend of the flute Sir James Galway.

Vingt ans après ma première sonate pour flûte et piano Le rire de Saraï, cette deuxième sonate n'est pas sous-tendue cette fois par une narration, son sujet est simplement le plaisir de chanter. Elle se présente en quatre mouvements contrastés, Modéré ? Vif ? Lent ? Très Vif et Joyeux. Le premier mouvement, calme et lyrique, est de forme ternaire. Une douce mélodie se développe en arche et mène à un pont sur la tête du thème. Une deuxième idée commence, haletante, portée par un crescendo passionné. La mélodie du début revient ensuite dans une couleur plus claire, soutenue par de doux carillons au piano. Le deuxième mouvement, le plus développé de la sonate, est très rapide et d'esprit scherzo. Bâti en cinq sections, il commence par le motif principal du mouvement à la flûte, tout en vitesse et légèreté. Le deuxième thème, autoritaire et vertical, est donné par le piano. Une deuxième section, plus lente, rappelle l'esprit du premier mouvement. Puis la course folle reprend alors en combinant les deux premiers motifs. La quatrième section retrouve le calme lyrisme de la deuxième, un instant de suspension du temps avant le retour du vertige de la vitesse qui s'évapore de manière inattendue. Le troisième mouvement, d'un seul tenant, lent et hiératique, est une déploration funèbre qui oppose le minéral du piano au mélismatique douloureux de la flûte, devenue une sorte de aulos grecque. Le cortège passe devant nous, empli de cris douloureux et de sanglots, puis se fond dans la nuit. Enfin, le Final expose au piano un thème d'accords, qui servira de refrain varié, puis la flûte bondit avec deux motifs rythmiques très joyeux. Commence alors une récapitulation de tous les thèmes de la sonate, entrecoupés du thème d'accords. À la fin, un nouveau thème au lyrisme exultant apparaît.
