Full Score-Vivace (2010) for string orchestra began its musical life as the third movement of my Sonata for Guitar (2009) recorded by Isaac Bustos on MSR Classics [MS 1581]. While writing the sonata I began to realize what a symphonic instrument the guitar really is and how well idiomatic guitar figurations might translate to the orchestra. As the title suggests Vivace is a short lively piece tinged with spiritual uplift. Supported by a steady rhythmic ostinato in stretto the broad melody (in slow harmonic rhythm) is presented first in the highest voice and then answered in a lower one. The dovetailing of gestures and its consequent antiphonal character permeate the movement.Often the melody is presented in harmony at the interval of the 7th or 9th. As with many of my recent compositions variation color and drama are enhanced by the juxtaposition of pandiatonic passages with those that are chromatic and dissonant. --Peter Lieuwen Vivace has been recorded by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra on MSR Classics [MS 1582].

What a clever idea! Of all the versions this carol has seen what better than a Viennese waltz with all the trademark characteristics including the oom-PAH-pah - accenting the second beat for authenticity. Audience swaying allowed.

Par CLARKE JEREMIAH. This arrangement of 'The Prince of Denmark March,' or 'Trumpet Voluntary,' provides the perfect setting for advocacy and striving for excellence since it is so recognizable. Three different versions of the final 8 bars, containing incorrect notes, are included. Each version contains an increasing percentage of correct pitches. Each represents a different letter grade. Play all four versions and then explain to parents and administration that the A+, 100% correct version is what we do every day in orchestra. All sections play the melody in this piece, still providing a solid musical setting in a novelty piece. Audience members are sure to recognize it which makes it perfect for finding 'errors.' Along with the 'real' music for the final 8 bars, three other versions are included. The first version has 80% of the correct notes and 20% incorrect. The next has 90% correct notes and 10% incorrect. The next has 95% correct notes and 5% incorrect. The final, 'real' version has 100% correct notes. The 100% version should be played first for the audience explaining this version would get an A+ in an academic setting. Then play the 80% or B- version, then the 90% or A- Version, and then the 95% A version. Then explain to parents and administration that the only version that is acceptable is the 100% version and that is what we do every day in orchestra. This provides a perfect advocacy moment to discuss the benefits of music education with parents and a tangible explanation of striving for excellence to parents and students. String Quartet no. 2 op. 15-Alexander Zemlinsky?s music was long unjustly overshadowed by what was regarded as the more progressive? Second Viennese School. Although Zemlinsky was close friends with its protagonist Arnold Schönberg he never did take the latter?s radical step into dodecaphony. At the same time he composed works that were no less original or fully fledged. Composed between 1913 and 1915 his Second String Quartet in particular pushed the contemporaneous understanding of form and tonality to its limits. With just one movement but spanning over 1 200 measures this multi-faceted work numbers among the most significant contributions to the genre of the time and has long merited acritical new edition. The Urtext edition by G. Henle Publishers corrects many errors and inaccuracies in the first edition that came to light after careful comparison with the autograph sources in Vienna and Washington. For the first time too the metronome markings that survive only in one of Zemlinsky?s letters have been incorporated.
