The March from the Second Suite in F for Military Band (Op. 28, No. 2) by Gustav Holst is a staple of the concert band repertoire. Andrew Poirier has masterfully arranged this band classic for trombone quintet (alto, 3 tenor, bass), complete with optional euphonium solo as in Holst's original. The Chorale from the Finale of Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection) by Gustav Mahler is taken from the fifth movement, lasting over an hour. The Chorale is actually a quote from the Dies Irae, which Mahler called the march of the dead. Also added in is the Resurrection theme which is almost a fanfare. This excerpt from the Symphony features the low brass which makes this arrangement by Randall Malmstrom so meaningful.For advanced performers, this work will add another dimension to your concert.

The Evening-Watch was written in 1925, when Holst lived in Thaxted, England having had to temporarily leave his teaching duties because of overwork and illness. This setting of Henry Vaughan's ‘Dialogue between the Body and the Soul' was too austere for listeners of its day and it remained out of print for thirty years, until 1965. Its mood of calm strength and passionate resignation sounds as if it belongs to the 1960's. This beautiful arrangement for 8-part trombone choir by Ronald Baron seems altogether appropriate given the instrument's vocal character, its frequent use for music at funerals and Holst's other musical passion; his short career as a trombonist.The 4 minute piece is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Mahler composed his 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1893 and 1894 in Steinbach on the Attersee near Salzburg. He spent most of his days those two summers composing in a tiny hut built to his specifications where he could compose in the meadow on the shore of the lake - undisturbed. Movement 5, What The Morning Bell Tells Me includes the voices of women's chorus, children and alto soloist and is a relatively short 4-minute bright rowdy episode, full of laughing voices, bells and angels. Ohad Wand arranged this great music for 12-part Trombone Choir while studying at the Eastman School and it was subsequently beautifully recorded by the Eastman Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. John Marcellus.
