The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organizations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.

Though he grew up in Vienna and Paris and spoke German as his native language, Ferenc Liszt's Hungarian patriotism was aroused by a natural disaster. ''Oh my wild and distant country! Your cry of pain has brought me back to you. I bow my head, ashamed that I have forgotten you for so long,'' he reacted to the news of the 1838 Danube floods that demolished much of Pest, and he announced a charity concert for the benefit of the victims. When he visited Hungary the following year, he was embraced by his compatriots with an unexpected enthusiasm that defied all description. This highly emotional encounter set his entire career onto a new track Hungarian motifs began to appear inhis music. This marked the beginning of the genesis of his 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies that spanned many decades. The opening theme of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, a piece that has acquired extraordinary popularity, was written down by Liszt in his sketchbook in 1847 in Ia i, Romania. The piece was published in 1851, later with separate cadenzas and ad-libitum variants added for two of Liszt s pupils. This revised (2020) edition, based on the New Liszt Edition, is distinguished by the inclusion of these, as well as a preface summarizing the latest findings of research, facsimile reproductions, and critical notes.

The Bitter Earth (Horka hlina) cantata was written in 1960 and it was originally conceived for a mixed choir and organ. The composer soon found, however, that this instrumental accompaniment limited the performance possibilities of the piece to a certain extent and he therefore created a piano transcription of the organ part for a later edition which was printed in 1987.The composition sets to music the verses of Jaroslav Seifert from the collection Turn Out the Lights (Zhasnete svetla) which was written in the period of the nation's peril prior to the Second World War. The genuine and totally non-cliched patriotism expressed in these texts has long outgrown the historical connection to the moment of their inception and it continues to bear wtness to Seivert's fervent love for this country.

Shulamit Ran’s second string quartet, subtitled “Vistas,†occupies a large canvas that is cast in a traditional fourmovement mold, where the outer movements present, explore, and later return to the work’s principal musical materials, surrounding a slow movement and scherzo-type third movement with a trio. In addition to tempo-based titles, the individual movements have subtitles that are evocative of each movement’s character, as follows: I. Concentric: from the inside out II. Stasis III. Flashes IV. Vistas. My second string quartet, “Vistasâ€, is a work cast in a traditional four-movement formal mold, with the outer movements, presenting and later returning to the work’s principal musical materials, surrounding a slow movement and a scherzo-type third movement. While the four movements’ “proper†names -- Maestoso con forza, Lento, Scherzo impetuoso, and Introduzione; Maestoso e grande – give some indication of the general character of the individual movements, I have also subtitled, less formally, each movement as follows: 1) Concentric: from the inside out 2) Stasis 3) Flashes 4) Vista. The images evoked by these titles tell one, I think, a bit more about the inner workings of the quartet. In the first movement, a prominently presented opening pitch (E) reveals itself, as the movement unfolds, to be a center of gravity from which ever-growing cycles of activity gradually evolve. While various important themes come into being as the movement progresses, their impact on the listener has, I believe, a great deal to do with their juxtaposition and relationship to the initial central point of gravity.Stasis is, as the name implies, a movement where activity seems, at times, almost suspended. Being also, as Webster’s Dictionary reminds us, “a state of static balance and equilibrium among opposing tendencies or forces,†it develops various materials, including ones from the first movement, without bringing them to points of resolution.Flashes is short and very fast, evoking in my mind the quick shimmer of fireflies, a “sudden burst of lightâ€, but also a “brief timeâ€. Perhaps, even, a “smileâ€?Finally, the last movement, Vista, is not only “a view or outlookâ€, but also “a comprehensive mental view of a series of remembered or anticipated events.â€Â After a brief recall of the opening of the second movement, this movement brings back all the important themes of the first movement in their original order. But just as going back can never really mean going back in time, the movement is much more than recapitulatory. By cutting through previously transitory passages and presenting the main ideas in a fashion more direct yet more evolved, it also sheds new light on earlier events, offering a retrospective, synoptic view of the first movement as it brings to culmination the work as a whole. “Vistas†was commissioned by C. Geraldine Freund for the Taneyev String Quartet of what was then Leningrad. It was the first commission given in this country to a Soviet chamber ensemble since the 1985 cultural exchange accord between the Soviet Union and the United States.

In a magazine with reports on mental institutions, Thomas Larcher came across interviews with patients: 'These sentences are of a strong inner power, yet do not claim to convey an overall picture of these people. There rather appear snatches from their world like a stroboscope.' The soprano part in Larcher's composition attends to these texts in a very restraint, often introverted manner, but they continue to have an effect in the instrumental parts, like catalysts of seemingly disturbing processes. The world premiere with Juliane Banse, Christian Tetzlaff, Nikolaj Schneider and the composer on the piano took place at the renowned festival 'Spannungen' in the power station of Heimbach in 2002. Recently, a recording has been released by ECM New Series.

Dutch composer, artist and poet Adriaen Valerius is mostly remembered today for his collection of 79 songs for voice and lute or cittern, published posthumously in 1626. Philip Sparke has taken one melody from this collection that tells of the War of Independence with Spain. The beautiful slow melody is followed by a series of lively variations to form an extremely entertaining piece that will bring great joy to all who perform and listen to it.
