With a title that refers to the energetic and rumbling Bass beneath the music Weir's work for Chamber Ensemble boasts an intriguing structure. Trios and Quartets appear for fleeting moments as the musicians jostle into groupsthat are soon abandoned...as the piece progresses so unison is gradually although tentatively achieved. Written for a large chamber ensemble of fourteen players the piece was completed in 2002.

Work for Chamber Ensemble dating from 1989.The composer writes: The Title SHADOWLAND refers on the one hand to a blurred ‘Landscape’ of shadows where small shadows are formed behind other shadows and where the outlines are constantly disintegrating. On the other hand the title refers to the fanciful and unreal landscapes I felt in the music while I was writing it. SHADOWLAND has four movements with proportions 4-7-4-3. These proportions can be found on various levels from the smallest cell to the largest form. The first movement is divided into four parts which have exactly the same proportions as the whole pjece and behind the fastrunning melodies and trills thatdominate the whole movement one can hear in the second third and fourth parts anticipations of the second third and fourth movements respectively. The second movement begins at the edge of silence with almost unperceptible glissandi and indistinct chorales. Gradually the hushed landscape is drowned out by sudden expressive melodic outbursts and ends with violent dance rhythms. The third movement is built up of clouds of staccato tones and is a further development of the pointillistic ideas from CLAIROBSCUR. In th last movement the horn plays a long soloistic melody line which the other instruments imitate and echo. These echoes swamp the horn line from time to time. SHADOWLAND was commissioned by and dedicated to The London Sinfonietta.

The first in a trilogy of works for chamber orchestra the Sinfonia Concertante uses its forces very much in concerto fashion - and not least its timpanist who signals the work to start and has a real melodic role at the start ofthe finale.The first performance took place in August 1983 as part of a BBC promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall London. The full score of Arena II written in 1996 by Magnus Lindberg for Chamber Orchestra. The work is a version for sixteen instruments derived from it's predecessor Arena and was commissioned by the LondonSinfonietta with funds from the Arts Council the Aldeburgh Festival and the South Bank Centre.

Work for Chamber Orchestra commissioned by the BBC for the 80th Birthday of Sir William Glock. Premiered by the London Sinfonietta May 1988.

Composed in homage to William Glock this single movement has something of the character of a slow fugue on a theme deeply imbued with minor thirds. The woodwinds and strings are considered as pairs in balance with each other and with the piano.Unbroken Circle was first performed in June 1984 during the Bath Festival by the London Sinfonietta conducted by Diego Masson.Set of parts. Raymond Premru was for many years the principal Bass Trombone of London?s Philharmonia Orchestra as well as having been a member of the Philip Johnson Brass Ensemble an active jazz musician teacher and composer.
