La catastrophe du réacteur nucléaire de Fukushima ajouta encore à ces malheurs : une période bien sombre de l?histoire du pays?Des événements aussi dramatiques ont souvent un impact négatif sur les arts culturels. Ce fut le cas au Japon : plusieurs orchestres d?harmonie des collèges des régions affectées perdirent leurs locaux de répétition et/ou leurs instruments. Il faudra beaucoup de temps pour que les choses reviennent à la normale - et pour estomperles cicatrices psychologiques. S?intéressant particulièrement à celles-ci Yutada Nishida (directeur du programme radiophonique The Bandwagon) demanda à quelques compositeurs d?écrire une œuvre simple pouvant être interprétée par de nombreux orchestres.Il se trouva que l?Harmonie Philharmonique d?Osaka (que Jan Van der Roost avait dirigée lors d?un concert exclusivement composé de ses œuvres le 25 septembre) avait eu la même idée. Ce concert vit la création mondiale de Song of Hope qui interpella immédiatement les musiciens et l?auditoire. Cette pièce débute sombrement dans le registre grave avant d?évoluer vers une conclusion plus pétillante plus optimiste. Il est assurément permis d?espérer des temps meilleurs !

Written as a memorial for a middle school band student this sensitive and moving work opens with a chorale played by off-stage brass. A flowing melody stated in the low register is then developed before leading to a brieffanfare-like affirmation. The Korean folk song ?You and I? is briefly quoted before returning to the off-stage brass and calm closing passage. A beautifully scored lyric piece for band. (Extra players are not requiredfor the off-stage parts.) Dur: 4:30

‘Dutch Christmas Song’ is an arrangement of the old Dutch song ‘Hoe leit dit Kindeke’ (Vlaanderen 1897). The tender almost fragile words have been movingly honoured by Timothy Travis. The addition of percussion gives this lovely Christmas song a modern touch.

Par HIMES WILLIAM. A marvelous suite! The bright, cheerful opening will engage the entire audience from the first measure. Movement 1 is based on El Tortillero (The Tortilla Vendor), and is very creatively scored including the joyful dissonance of a busy street corner. The heartfelt and poignant second movement makes a pleasant contrast, and the Allegro Festivo marking for the third movement means more fun in the sun, including wonderful Percussion parts. LATIN FOLK SONG TRILOGY is a large-scale work for Grade 3, but the suite format keeps it manageable and William Himes' skillful scoring keeps all parts interesting to play while within appropriate technical demands. / Niveau : 3 / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

Drawing on the rich African musical tradition here is a collection of three captivating themes in a miniature suite format. Included is Jikel' Emaweni a South African Folk song in a moderate tempo the up tempo Zulu folksong Jabula Jesu and moving national anthem of South Africa N'kosi Sikelel' I Afrika. The percussion writing is exotic sounding but can be played using traditional instruments as well. A marvelous introduction tothe sounds of Africa for young players.

from Casanova-Song for Peace (also known as The Nun’s Chorus) is from Johan Strauss Jr. much neglected opera Casanova. It has been arranged for beginner bands and can be played with a minimum of four players (+ percussion). It stately melody will bring a little regalness to any concert.
